Week 1 NFL Matchup: Minnesota Vikings @ New Orleans Saints

Thursday, September 9, 2010

NFL betting favorite: Saints -4 The season kicks off in style with the defending champion Saints opening at home in the raucous Louisiana Superdome. Their opponent: their fellow NFC finalists, the Minnesota Vikings. The NFL Week 1 odds have to go New Orleans’ way here. First off, they’ll be energized playing at home in one of the league’s wildest buildings and raising their banner. Secondly, the Vikings’ offense may not be up to speed just yet. Brett Favre still hasn’t signed. If he doesn’t play, Tarvaris Jackson will be thrown to the wolves against a defense that forces tons of turnovers. If Favre does play, the Saints showed in the NFC championship last year that they know how to beat him. They’ll hit him early and often. Pick: Saints -4

Week 1 NFL Matchup: Atlanta Falcons @ Pittsburgh Steelers

Sunday, September 12, 1:00 p.m. ET

NFL betting favorite: Falcons -1 Oooh. Tough choice here. On one hand, you have one of the NFL’s most ferocious and formidable defenses opening the season at home. On the other, the Steelers won’t have the suspended Ben Roethlisberger under center. The Steelers offense could have some major growing pains as it tries to break in backup pivot Byron Leftwich (or Dennis Dixon) and transition to a more run-focused attack featuring Rashard Mendenhall. Meanwhile, Matt Ryan and the Atlanta Falcons’ offense could be a well-oiled machine. Ryan worked hard this offseason and could be a Pro Bowler in 2010. Look for him to catch the Steelers off guard and lead the Falcons to victory. Pick: Falcons -1

Week 1 NFL Matchup: Denver Broncos @ Jacksonville Jaguars

Sunday, September 12, 1:00 p.m. ET

NFL betting favorite: Jaguars -1 The Broncos’ NFL Week 1 odds are among the cloudiest. It appears Kyle Orton will retain the starting quarterback job to start the year. But how will Tim Tebow factor in? Will Josh McDaniels use him at the goal line? The Denver passing game is a mystery – especially since Brandon Marshall is gone as the No. 1 wideout. But reports out of camp are that Knowshon Moreno is ready to break out as the featured back in his second season. The only problem: the Broncos may be forced to throw. Their run defense ranked near the bottom of the league last year and they have the daunting task of stopping the human bowling ball known as Maurice Jones-Drew. I don’t think the new-look Broncos are ready to win on the road in Week 1. Pick: Jags -1

Week 1 NFL Matchup: Detroit Lions @ Chicago Bears

Sunday, September 12, 1:00 p.m. ET

NFL betting favorite: Bears -7 You can always find value among the NFL Week 1 odds because oddsmakers never really know just how much teams have improved or regressed until they see all their starters on the field. The Detroit Lions seem poised to shock some opponents this season. Matt Stafford showed flashes of being a winner as a rookie and his group of weapons his growing. He has Calvin Johnson, Nate Burleson – and rookie Jahvid Best, who could give the Bears major headaches in a hybrid role. Yeah, Mike Martz will help the Bears score points, but he’ll also leave Jay Cutler open to more hits. That’s music to Kyle Vanden Bosch and Ndamukong Suh – assuming he signs. The Lions should keep this close. Pick: Lions +7
