Headline: Packers Look to Keep Playoff March Going – Host Titans in Week 16

The newly crowned NFC North Champion Green Bay Packers will be looking to keep the momentum going this week as they build for what they hope is a long playoff run. This week they host a Tennessee team that has long been out of the playoff picture but will have motivation as they try to stake claim for next year’s squad.

The Titans have won three straight games between the two sides but you’d have to think that four in a row is extremely unlikely based on the current state of both franchises.

The Tennessee Titans are coming to the end of what has been an awful season. A win against the hapless Jets on Monday night got them to five wins – little consolation for a team that had hoped to contend in the AFC South this season.

The Titans already spoiled the Jets slim dream of a playoff run and now focus on disrupting the momentum that Green Bay has gained since a 2-3 start.

The Titans have been a bad offense all season long although Chris Johnson has shed the “Bust” tag and has been effective this season – a 94 yard TD run Monday night ended up being the difference in that game. But 14 points against a bad Jets defense is nothing to write home about!

Tennessee enters Sunday’s game with the league’s 21st ranked passing game, the 19th best rushing attack and they are 23rd in scoring – an average of 20.36 points per game. Their numbers certainly are an accurate depiction of where this team is offensively.

The Titans defense will absolutely have to be on top of their games in order to give Tennessee a chance on Sunday. They were awful early in the season but have been better lately. Since a 51-20 loss to Chicago on Nov. 4, the Titans rank third in total defense (285.8 yards per game), and fourth giving up 17.6 points per contest. Overall the Titans are 30th in points against, 25th versus the run and 19th against the pass.

The Green Bay Packers still have a lot to play for – a first round bye is within their grasp and they know it! The Pack learned a valuable lesson last year when they rested their players down the stretch and lost in the first round of the playoffs! The Packers will bring a full lineup and play hard every snap despite already qualifying for the playoffs.

Aaron Rodgers connected with James Jones on three touchdown passes as part of his 23-for-36, 291-yard performance against the Bears last week, while Randall Cobb caught six passes for 115 yards and added 37 in kick-return yardage. Jordy Nelson sat out, Greg Jennings was largely ineffective and the Packers still posted an impressive road win – scary! [soliloquy id=”82219″]

The Packers come into Week 16 with the league’s 13th ranked passing game (No that’s not a misprint!!) and the 20th ranked running game. They are 13th in scoring with an average of 24.57 points per game. Green Bay is much better than their numbers suggest however – it is strange to see them middle of the pack in most categories!

The Packers defense has been banged up all season long but the return of Clay Matthews last week provided a huge boost to the average defense. A few other starters are scheduled to return before the end of the regular season moving an average defense up a tier or two in the rankings. Green Bay’s defense likely won’t have to be great against Tennessee – good will be adequate!

Betting Prediction: A few trends to consider:
• The total has gone UNDER in 4 of Tennessee’s last 5 games
• Tennessee is 4-2 SU in its last 6 games when playing Green Bay
• Tennessee is 2-5 SU in its last 7 games
• Tennessee is 2-5 SU in its last 7 games on the road
• The total has gone UNDER in 5 of Green Bay’s last 5 games
• Green Bay is 5-0 SU in its last 5 games at home
• Green Bay is 8-1 SU in its last 9 games
• The total has gone OVER in 16 of Green Bay’s last 22 games at home

Normally I stay away from any spread north of 10 points and this line currently sits at 13. But that said the Packers to a man are a motivated bunch with a goal clearly in their minds. Tennessee barely squeaked one out last week at home against the Jets – not exactly confidence-inspiring! Green Bay will score some points this week – Tennessee will be hard pressed to hit double digits. It all adds up to an easy win for the Pack.

Pick: Green Bay Packers -13
