2009 Record: 8-8
ATS: 6-10-0

You’d be hard pressed to find any team that had more of a rollercoaster ride in 2009 than the Tennessee Titans.

After going winless in their first six games, including a 59-0 drubbing at the hands of the Patriots which – believe it or not – easily could have been worse, the Titans turned to quarterback Vince Young and the whole season turned around overnight.

The Titans finished the season with a remarkable 8-2 run, and although they missed the playoffs one year after finishing as the top seed in the AFC postseason, they secured the answers to two vital questions about their future: first, who their starting quarterback would be going forward (Young); second, who the best running back in the NFL is right now (Tennessee’s Chris Johnson).

Johnson’s 2006-yard season last year was a marvel in which he made jaws drop from coast to coast, and while it may never be repeated, at least for now, he’s definitely king of the mountain.

But the 2009 turnaround wasn’t just about Johnson; the re-emergence of Young, combined with the sparkling performance of wide receiver Kenny Britt alongside solid complementary contributions from Nate Washington and Justin Gage, allowed Tennessee to show off a version of the balanced attack that made the Titans so formidable in 2008, when they went 13-3 and outpaced the rest of their conference.

Tennessee’s problem last year stemmed in large part, particularly early on, from painfully inadequate defense. Losing defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz to the Lions before the season was an event that rippled through the team and cut into the locker room far longer and deeper than anybody could have predicted.

The Titans’ defense didn’t lack for talent, the gang of 11 on that side of the ball was just woefully out of position on a frighteningly consistent basis.

This year Tennessee looks to improve in all phases of the game, even where the Titans seem to be the strongest.

Despite having Johnson at running back, Jeff Fisher’s club drafted not one, but two new running backs in LeGarrette Blount (Oregon) and Stafon Johnson (USC). The Titans also brought in USC receiver Damian Williams and picked up the smartest player in the entire draft in safety (and Rhodes Scholar) Myron Rolle.

Tennessee also brought in cornerback Tye Hill from Atlanta and linebacker Will Witherspoon from Philadelphia (the latter should ease the loss of Keith Bulluck to the Giants).

Then the Titans spent their first round draft pick on projected stud defensive end Derrick Morgan out of Georgia Tech in an effort to shore up a defensive line that missed Albert Haynesworth last year, just as everyone predicted.

It all shapes up in a way that suggests the 2010 Titans will look a lot more like the team that finished 2009 as opposed to the one that started it. That’s a good thing for them, too, as the AFC South has become a tough division with a lot of talent in relatively short order.
