2008 Record: 9-7
ATS: 8-8

After unexpectedly firing head coach Jon Gruden, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers look like they are ready to make a run at the first overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft.
The Bucs didn’t just get rid of their veteran coaching staff and front office, they also cut ties with plenty of roster veterans like Jeff Garcia, Warrick Dunn and Derrick Brooks, who were good locker room leaders.
Replacing Garcia, the team’s starting quarterback, is the biggest feat as the Bucs simply don’t have any good options.

Luke McCown and Byron Leftwich will battle it out but that like choosing between a Kia and a Pontiac: neither will take you really far.

Other questionable offseason decisions include the Bucs acquiring outspoken tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. and his bum knees via trade, and immediately made him the highest paid player at his position before he’d even played a down with the Bucs. The team also direct-deposited a boatload of cash in to running back Derrick Ward’s account, which could be a smart move long term but the team clearly has bigger problems.

Losing veteran coaches like Gruden and defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin are going to be very difficult to overcome. Gruden made offensive parts like Antonio Bryant, Earnest Graham and Jerramy Stevens overachieve. Who knows how good they’ll be without their offensive guru. And on defense, Kiffin made the Bucs defense into a dynasty but now that he’s gone and the scheme has changed, how long will it take to transition? How good will the Cover Two parts be in the new scheme?

The Buccaneers have tons of holes on their roster, which is surprising because they have the most salary cap space in the NFL.

There has clearly been a changing for the guard in Tampa Bay and now they are clearly in rebuilding mode. Unfortunately with a young, inexperienced head coach, no clear direction and no clear foundation for the future, the Bucs are going to endure a difficult year in 2009.

I think the quarterback position is going to be a major problem for the Bucs this season.

I’m not sold on either Leftwich or McCown as a legitimate starter and Josh Freeman is a couple of seasons away from being ready to start.

Leftwich wins a race between “who gives us the least chance of losing” QB’s. Not exaclty an electric competition. Watch for Cadillac to make a comeback and the defense should be better. The lack of scary receivers will stunt the offense but they will finish 3rd in the NFC South.

A battle for 3rd in the NFC South is about all the Bucs fans have to look forward to and 3rd seems like a logshot! Somehow, the Front Office decided to rid the team of leadership (Garcia, Brooks & Dunn LOL) and replace it with bitches whose testicles may or may not have already been donated to science (Winslow). Gonna be a long year. 3 wins max.!!!! Gruden will be snickering from the booth on Monday Night Football…
