Tampa Bay Buccaneers (7-3)

Last week, I said that Tampa was making a believer out of me. And last Sunday’s 21-0 win over San Francisco – at San Francisco – obviously did nothing to quell my enthusiasm.

The Bucs totally smothered a hot Troy Smith, holding him to 148 passing yards and picking him off; they also did an amazing job against Frank Gore, limiting him to 23 yards on 12 carries. Josh Freeman was his usual efficient self, throwing for two touchdowns and completing 65 per cent of his passes.

With just 136 passing yards and 20 attempts, Freeman played second fiddle to the Bucs’ improving running game. Tampa gashed an above-average San Francisco run defense for 162 yards, led by battering ram LeGarrette Blount and change-of-pace back Cadillac Williams.

The Bucs aren’t likely to duplicate their performance versus Frank Gore when they face Ray Rice this weekend; Tampa’s defense still has a long way to go against the run and it will have to respect Joe Flacco a lot more than it did Troy Smith. But the Bucs’ pass defense looks for real. Tampa has picked off 15 passes in 10 games, good for second in the league, and ranks sixth in the NFL with just 200.8 passing yards allowed per game.

Baltimore Ravens (7-3)

We’ve seen some Super Bowl contenders have their ups and downs this season but the Ravens have been very much as advertised, with very few hiccups along the way. They lost nail-biters against New England and Atlanta, two teams tied for the NFL’s best record, on the road. They lost a tough divisional rivalry game to Cincy earlier this season. All three of those defeats were by five points or fewer.

Otherwise, it’s been smooth sailing for Baltimore. Joe Flacco and his rocket arm continue to blossom. Since Week 2, Flacco has 15 touchdown passes and just two interceptions over eight games. He’s maturing into an elite passer.

Last week, Baltimore’s defense took center stage, gobbling up the Panthers’ fourth-string quarterback, Brian St-Pierre, and scoring two pick-sixes.

Betting Trends:

Under is 9-2 in TB last 11 games in Week 12.
Under is 12-5 in TB last 17 games overall.
TB are 3-7 ATS vs. a team with a winning record.

The pick:

Am I missing something here? I think Baltimore wins this game but I think you should run to your sportsbook and throw down on Tampa +7.5 before the spread shrinks any more.

This Bucs team has won four of five. It’s 5-0 against the spread on the road. It just shut out a hot team on the road. It’s also playing an overrated Baltimore pass defense that struggled to stop Ryan Fitzpatrick, Kyle Orton and Matt Ryan this season.

I think Tampa keeps this game very close and entertaining. The Ravens should edge the Bucs for a win – but by a field goal, not by more than a touchdown.
