2013 SuperBowl Predictions – Handicapping why 49ers will win

Handicapping The 49ers Super Bowl Chances

So here is your soon-to-be Super Bowl-champion San Francisco 49ers: How do you think Alex Smith is feeling these days?

Through eight games this season Smith had quarterbacked the San Francisco 49ers to a tidy 5-3 record. He had a win over Green Bay in his back pocket, and his Niners headed into their bye week with back-to-back division wins over Arizona and Seattle.

Life was good for Smith, whose career in San Francisco had been noted more for stops and starts than success.

Then it was over.

When the Niners emerged from two weeks off, backup Colin Kaepernick was calling signals and Smith Critics who howled about turning the keys over to an untested QB have been silenced by the Niners’ division title and grueling playoff victories over Green Bay and Atlanta. Kaepernick is the man, probably for good.

With Kaepernick the Niners are letting the good times roll again for the first time since the Montana/Young Era ended two decades ago. And the kid has shown none of the jitters that we would expect from someone playing in a first Super Bowl in his first real season behind center.

“Just keep going,” former 49er QB Young reportedly told Kaerpernick when the Niners arrived in New Orleans for the Super Bowl. And there is every reason to believe that the kid will do just that, even though he is making just his 10th career start and will be going up against Baltimore’s veteran defense.

If he even comes close to his playoff stats (105.9 passer rating, with a combined total of 33 for 52 passing for 496 yards and three TD passes), San Francisco will be hoisting the Lombardi Trophy for the sixth time. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

People seem to get nervous when quarterbacks tuck the ball and run. Michael Vick will have a tough time getting playing time because he boycotted the film room and now spends a lot of time in the trainer’s room because of beatings his leg have taken. Who knows what will happen with Robert Griffin?

But on this one day Colin Kaepernick will make things so uncomfortable for Baltimore that he will prevent the Ravens’ defense from teeing off on him the way it did on Tom Brady in the AFC title game. And with the Ravens forced to read and react more than they have, Kaepernick will have extra time to let receivers get free.

In the movie Silver Linings Playbook (stupid name), Robert DeNiro’s character talks about “Joo-Joo” – good karma that will help his beloved Eagles if his son will just watch them play on TV, or go to the game. In the Super Bowl on Sunday, the 49ers will have that “Joo-Joo,” and they will beat the Baltimore Ravens.

It’s the Niners’ time. Jim Harbaugh has made the right calls all season. On Sunday night Colin Kaepernick – with tattoos all over his body and oozing “Joo-Joo,” will lead San Francisco to another Super Bowl title.

And Smith will feel the same way that Drew Bledsoe felt in early 2002 when he lost his job to Tom Brady, never to get it back.
