The New Orleans Saints followed-up their victory over Indianapolis in Super Bowl XLIV with a respectable 11-5 record and wildcard berth in the playoffs, but they also posted a few head-scratching losses, most notably a 41-36 loss to Seattle in the playoffs as a 9.5-point road favorite.

The pieces remain in place for another run to this year’s title game, but they will have to avoid the mistakes, breakdowns, and turnovers that haunted them at times in 2010.

Saints Super Bowl Lines & Predictions

It all starts with Drew Brees at quarterback. He continues to be one of the best in the league with over 4,300 passing yards in each of his last five seasons, including 4,620 yards in 2010.

He completed 68.1 percent of his passes and tossed 33 touchdown passes, but his 22 interceptions last year were the most in his illustrious 10-year career.

To get back to the Super Bowl the Saints knew it had to improve a running game that finished last season ranked 28th in the league, so they so they decided to draft running back Mark Ingram from Alabama with the 28th overall pick in the first round of this year’s draft. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

The loss of Reggie Busch, especially on third downs could hurt, but look for Ingram to become a big part of this offense right from the start.

The Saints’ defense ended up ranked seventh in points allowed and fourth in total yards in 2010, but it needs to tighten up on the 112.3 yards per game it gave up on the ground.

They used the draft to add some much needed youth and depth by selecting defensive end Cameron Jordan in the first round and linebacker Martez Wilson and defensive back Jonny Patrick with two picks in the third round.

New Orleans also signed defensive end Jeff Charleston and defensive back Paul Oliver as unrestricted free agents.

It is shaping up as a three-way dog fight in the NFC South between teams that each won at least 10 games last season.

There is little question that Brees and the Saints’ offense will continue to put points on the board and combined with a decent defensive effort it should be enough to lock-up the division.
