Injuries took their toll as the season progressed and the Colts quietly exited the postseason with a 17-16 loss to New York in the Wildcard Round.

Colts Super Bowl Lines & Predictions

Indianapolis’s passing offense, under the guidance of future ‘Hall of Fame’ QB Peyton Manning, was the best in the league last season with an average of 381 yards per game and the offense as a whole scored 27.2 points a game, but it could only average 92.7 yards a game on the ground, which became a major problem late in the year.

Second-year RB Donald Brown was the leading rusher with 497 yards, with Joseph Addai a close second with 495 yards. The Colts added Delone Carter out of Syracuse in the fourth round of the draft, but may have to look to free agency to try and add a back that can give them 200+ carries this season.

Of immediate concern is the health of Manning himself. He is coming off minor neck surgery in late May and could miss a good portion of the preseason while recovering. To make matters even trickier, he is currently a free agent, but protected by the team’s ‘franchise tag’.

How much a distraction will be caused by trying to sign him to a long term deal remains to be seen. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Indianapolis also has some serious concerns with a defense that was ranked 25th in the NFL against the run and 23rd in points allowed.

It added a bit of help through the draft by selecting DL Drake Nevis and DB Chris Rucker in the later rounds, but will most likely have to look to free agency to try and fill some of the more pressing needs on this side of the ball.

The Colts still have two of the best defensive players in the NFL in DE’s Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis, but will need to provide them some help in order to improve upon last season’s performance.

The gap in the AFC South between Indianapolis and the rest of the division is not nearly as wide as it once was, and this team could easily find itself battling for a Wildcard position to get into the playoffs.

With Manning behind center, the Colts will always have a chance to win, but there is little value in their odds as he is starting to show his age as is the rest of this team.
