Superbowl 46 Betting Online – 2011 Bengals Season Preview

This is one franchise that loves getting in its own way when it comes to success. The 2009 season appeared to be a turning point for Cincinnati, after winning the AFC North with a 10-6 record, but the glory was short lived after falling back to earth with just four victories in 2011.

Questionable moves, such as adding Terrell Owens to a team that already had Chad Johnson, did not pan out and for the fourth time in the past five years, the Bengals failed to win more than eight games.

Bengals Super Bowl Lines & Predictions

This only adds to the dubious legacy of a franchise that has had two winning seasons in the past 20 years.

Both Owens and Johnson are gone, but the biggest problem facing this team heading into the 2011 season is at the quarterback position. So far, Carson Palmer has held firm in his threat to retire is he was not traded, and rock-headed team owner Mike Brown has indicated that he has no intention to try and add some value to his team by getting something in return for a player that no longer wants to be in Cincinnati.

Enter rookie QB Andy Dalton, from TCU as the heir apparent to Palmers’ starting job. Even under the best of circumstances, this would be a tough transition, but given current talent level of this offensive squad, putting Dalton in this position could be considered downright criminal. At least he will have another rookie to throw the ball to with the selection of WR A.J. Green with the fourth overall pick in the draft.

The Bengals’ defense was nothing to write home about last season, finishing the year ranked 15th in total yards allowed, but 24th in points allowed. It took a hit it did not need last week when cornerback Jonathan Joseph jumped ship to sign with Houston.

They were able to replace him with 10-year veteran Nate Clements, who was recently released by San Francisco, but they still came out on the losing end in that exchange.

Everything points to a disastrous season for Cincinnati at this point. The ‘under’ on 7.5 wins is looking like an absolute gift unless something changes Palmer’s mind about playing for the Bengals this year.

Even that would make winning eight or more games a stretch for a team that has failed to eclispse that mark so many times in the past.
