The result was a 5-11 record and last-place finish in division after two straight NFC West titles and a trip to the Super Bowl in 2008.

Cardinals Super Bowl Lines & Predictions

In an effort to find a permanent replacement for Warner, fifth-year Head Coach Ken Whisenhunt decided to take a gamble on Philadelphia backup Kevin Kolb as the solution by trading away Pro Bowl defensive back Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and a second-round pick in next year’s draft for his services.

This will be a make or break decision for Whisenhunt, as Kolb has shown flashes of greatness, but only has started a total of seven games in his four-year career.

The main thing in Kolb’s favor is having someone like Larry Fitzgerald to throw the ball to. He is coming off a his fifth 1000-yard season after posting a team-high 90 receptions for 1,137 yards and six TD’s with four different quarterbacks throwing him the ball. These numbers should dramatically improve with Kolb as his quarterback.

After Fitzgerald, Arizona is pretty thin in the receiving corps so it is hoping that someone steps up to fill the void left by the loss of Steve Breaston, who signed with Kansas City as a free agent. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

A major plus would be an improved running game behind Beanie Wells, who has yet to live up to his potential as a No.1 pick out of Ohio State.

Another area the Cardinals looked to improve was the defensive secondary, with the addition of first-round pick Patrick Peterson. They were ranked 23rd in the league against the pass last season and 29th overall.

The loss of Cromartie and possibly S Adrian Wilson, who tore a bicep muscle in practice, will not help matters, but Peterson should be able to step in right away as a playmaker for this squad.

All the pressure this season will rest on Kolb’s shoulders, but this team remains questionable in a number of areas, especially on defense.

The 2011 Cardinals will look a little more like their 2008 and 2009 version as opposed to last year’s mess, but they still have a ways to go to get all the way back to the top of the heap.
