Headline: 49ers Look to Flex NFC West Muscle Versus Improving Rams

The San Francisco 49ers, fresh off a bye will attempt to create a little more space between themselves and the other improving NFC West teams Sunday when they host the Jeff Fisher coached Rams, a team that is improving but appears to still be a year or two away from really competing at the highest level.

The 49ers are coming off a very impressive win before the bye while the Rams were simply outclassed in their last outing in London versus the New England Patriots.

The St. Louis Rams have done some good things under Coach Jeff Fisher but the decade long rebuilding process continues for its frustrated fans. The problem has been the offense… again. Currently the Rams are 24th in the league in passing and 18th in rushing. Sam Bradford has completed 61.4 percent with eight touchdowns and seven interceptions while being sacked 23 times. Steven Jackson is averaging 3.7 yards per carry and he has 12 catches while Daryl Richardson is averaging 5.4 yards per carry and he has 14 catches.

The offense will get a boost this week however – Danny Amendola, clearly their best pass catcher is due back from injury.

Defensively the Rams have been OK – 13th against the run and 17th versus the pass. They will have their hands full this weekend against a 49ers team that is dangerous in both the pass and run games.

The San Francisco 49ers have had some hiccups this season but when they put it all together there is no denying that they are one of the best in the NFC. Alex Smith has been feast or famine this season but is coming off a game in which he had three TD passes and just one incompletion. It was one of the best QB performances of the year.

As it stands, San Francisco has the 28th ranked passing game although this stat seems a tad unfair, and they are the #1 rushing offense in the game. Alex Smith has completed 69.4 percent of his passes with 12 touchdowns and five interceptions while being sacked 22 times. Frank Gore is tearing it up averaging 5.5 yards per carry with four touchdowns while catching 16 passes and Kendall Hunter is averaging 5.0 yards per carry. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

The 49ers defense continues to do their jobs as one of the top units in the game. They allow just 12.88 points per game, the best in the NFL, they are 2nd against the pass allowing just 184 yards per game and they are 5th versus the run. San Francisco is scary on defense and a challenge even for the best of offensive units.

Betting Prediction:

• The total has gone UNDER in 8 of St. Louis’s last 10 games on the road
• The total has gone UNDER in 4 of St. Louis’s last 6 games when playing on the road against San Francisco
• The total has gone UNDER in 8 of St. Louis’s last 12 games when playing San Francisco
• The total has gone UNDER in 4 of St. Louis’s last 6 games
• San Francisco is 7-1 SU in its last 8 games when playing St. Louis
• San Francisco is 6-1 SU in its last 7 games when playing at home against St. Louis
• The total has gone UNDER in 5 of San Francisco’s last 6 games
• San Francisco is 10-2 SU in its last 12 games at home

San Francisco is clearly the superior team heading into Sunday’s contest. But the Rams are a formidable defense that have had an extra week to prepare for this game. I’m not saying that St. Louis wins this game but I am suggesting they keep this game closer than the double-digit spread. In a divisional game, I think the Rams test the 49ers.

Pick: St. Louis Rams to cover the 11 points
