St. Louis Rams vs. Arizona Cardinals Preview

With their last win the St Louis Rams (5-6) pulled into a first place tie with Seattle in the NFC West and they can stay atop the division with an away win over the struggling Arizona Cardinals (3-8) this Sunday. NFL lines have the Rams as 3.5-point favorites in this division game with a total of 43.5.

In their last games the Cardinals lost badly at home 27-6 to the San Francisco 49ers while the Rams beat the Denver Broncos 36-33 in a shootout.

The Cardinals’ season is turning into a nightmare, as they have lost 6 games in a row. Derek Anderson blew up at the media after the San Fran loss and the team is weak on both sides of the ball. Their offense ranks 30th in the league in passing yards per game and 31st in the league in rushing yards per game and their D has been simply awful lately. However, things are not all lost in the desert, as since Arizona is in the weak NFC West they only trail St. Louis and Seattle by 2 games. Still, if they lose this game their playoff hopes are likely dashed.

St. Louis won their first road game in more than a year last week in Denver and this week in Arizona look to win back-to-back road games for the first time in 3 years. Sam Bradford had his first 300-yard passing game last week and he has been one of the main reasons the Rams are tied atop the NFC West. Their offense is playing with confidence, for a change, and last week they scored the most points they have all season.

The Cardinals have not only been a bad team this season, but they have also been a bad betting team at 3-8 ATS. On the other side of the coin the Rams are 8-3 ATS. St. Louis is only 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games against the Cardinals, but all of those games featured a guy named Kurt Warner under center for Arizona. Football betting

Derek Anderson will get the start in St. Louis even though he struggled last week going 16/35 for 196 yards with an INT. Arizona head coach Ken Whisenhunt recently stated about Anderson, “He’s in here every morning, trying to get better. I have seen him make improvement over the last few weeks. That’s really what you look for and I think he gives us the best chance to win right now.” That is not good if Anderson, who has the 3rd lowest QB rating in the league, gives your team the best chance to win. He and WR Larry Fitzgerald will have to hook up on some big plays and they may be able to do that against a Rams’ passing D that ranks 21st in the league and gave up 330 passing yards last week to Denver.

As bad as the passing offense has been in Arizona the rushing offense has been worse. The Cardinals are averaging 78 rushing yards per game and in the loss to the 49ers last week they only picked up 13 rushing yards. The RB duo of Beanie Wells and Tim Hightower have to take some pressure off Anderson, but they will be facing a solid St. Louis run defense that ranks 13th in the league.

Bradford has played well despite the fact the Rams do not have a very good WR corps and they also lost TE Michael Hoomanawanui for 4-6 weeks due to a high ankle sprain. I mean last week WR Danario Alexander had 9 catches for 173 yards and 1 TD after being on the practice squad for most of the year. Arizona has 21 sacks on the season and they have to pressure Bradford and not give him time to tear apart their suspect secondary.

Rams’ RB Steven Jackson rushed for 72 yards last week, but only averaged 2.5 yards per carry. He will likely improve those numbers this week since he will get a lot of touches and will be facing a Cardinals’ run defense that ranks 2nd to last in the league.

The Rams are confident and it looks as if the Cardinals’ confidence is shot. Arizona will play a better game this Sunday, but the Rams will still win this game and cover the 3.5-point spread moving to .500 for the season.

Betting Trends

St. Louis is 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games against teams with a losing record and 4-1 ATS in their last 4 road games. Arizona is 1-4 ATS in their last 5 home games and 2-6 ATS in their last 8 games as an underdog.

Pick: Rams -3.5
