2011 St. Louis Rams Team Preview | NFL Predictions

The surprise team of the 2010 NFL season was the Kansas City Chiefs, but right behind one of Missouri’s football teams stood the other one, the St. Louis Rams.

2011 St. Louis Rams Team Preview/Predictions
2010 Record: 7-9
ATS Record: 10-6

The Rams fell just one win short of making it back to the playoffs last season and should be in contention once again this year.

The Rams almost went from worst to first in one season. If the Rams hit on their draft picks and Offensive Rookie of the Year Same Bradford continues to improve, the Rams could be the team to beat in the NFC West.

There’s no reason to think the Rams couldn’t finish the season with between 8-10 wins.

That is, of course, if they can manage to get through the first portion of their schedule. The Rams’ first seven games are arguably the hardest in the league. They open against the Eagles in week one. Then they head to the Meadowlands to battle the Giants on Monday Night Football in week two. Then the Rams welcome Baltimore in week three before hosting Washington in week four.

All this comes before their bye week in week five. After the bye, the Rams travel to Green Bay and Dallas in back to back weeks before facing New Orleans in week eight.

If St. Louis can tread water during this stretch of games, it will be smooth sailing during division play.

After a relatively dominant decade, the Rams finished 3-13 in 2007. Somehow, the St. Louis football team only managed to get worse the next two seasons, going 2-14 in 2008 and 1-15 in 2009. Then, however, came the savior for a once-proud franchise, Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford, the 2008 Heisman Trophy winner. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

In his rookie campaign, Bradford threw for 3,512 yards while versatile running back Steven Jackson tallied 1,624 yards from scrimmage. The St. Louis defense was also much improved, ranking 12th in the NFL in points allowed, thanks to defense-minded head coach Steve Spagnuolo.

Where the Rams really were successful was on third down, when opponents converted only 33.48 percent of the time.

That ranked second best in the National Football League.

If the Rams are going to take the next step to becoming a threat in the NFC, they are going to have to acquire a true deep threat at the wide receiver spot. Danny Amendola is a solid player with potential but he lacks the ability to stretch the field and seems better suited as a complimentary receiver.

The Rams addressed some of their pass catching issues in the draft when they used their second, third, and fourth round draft picks on either a tight end or a wideout. Also, the addition of Josh McDaniels as offensive coordinator should be huge for Bradford and the receiving corps.

St. Louis also needs to get better with its rush defense; the Rams allowed opposing running backs to average 4.48 yards per attempt last season which ranked 22nd in the NFL.

The Rams also addressed this issue in the draft when they selected North Carolina defensive end Robert Quinn, who should be a vital asset up front.
