2009 Record: 1-15
ATS: 7-9

The 2008 Detroit Lions failed to win a single time in 16 NFL games. The 2009 St. Louis Rams came very close to matching the Lions’ new (low) standard of ineptitude and impotence.

In Steve Spagnuolo’s first season as an NFL head coach, the former defensive coordinator for the New York Giants might have wished that he was still wearing a headset in New York, guiding the kings of the NFL’s 2007 season.

Spagnuolo won Super Bowl XLII with the Giants, so the 2009 journey he endured with the Rams stood on the opposite side of the NFL spectrum. It couldn’t have been more different.[soliloquy id=”82219″]

St. Louis was plainly abysmal last year; the Rams weren’t competitive in most of their games, and even when they did play teams close on the scoreboard, their level of play was noticeably poor. A 9-7 loss to the lowly (4-12) Washington Redskins offered a classic case in point.

The Rams’ only win, fittingly enough, came against the 2-14 Lions, the same team that produced the historic 0-16 bagel in 2008. Quarterback Marc Bulger – who once led the Rams to NFC West titles and guided the team to the second weekend (the divisional round) of the NFL playoffs – has ceased to be a productive quarterback now that he lacks prime-time receivers or upper-tier offensive linemen.

Bulger was a piñata in 2009, as defenses repeatedly hounded him and suffocated the entirety of the Rams’ offense. St. Louis scored at least 20 points on only two occasions in 2009, and never scored more than 23 points in a single game. That’s how dreadful the Rams turned out to be.

This wasn’t a 1-15 season that should have been 5-11 or 6-10.

This was a 1-15 season that could have been 2-14 at best.

It was a train wreck.

In 2010, the Rams – not exactly showing a lot of vision and forethought – tabbed Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford with the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft. Forget the fact that they lacked premiere offensive linemen; the Rams took a talented but frail quarterback with a very tender and vulnerable shoulder.

They lavished $50 million in guaranteed money on Bradford before he took even one NFL snap. The Rams could have gotten a lot better with a fierce defensive run stopper such as Ndamukong Suh or Gerald McCoy; they could have traded down and gotten a lot of value for the No. 1 pick they held; instead, they stubbornly insisted on Bradford, and are how holding the bag.

Spagnuolo and the rest of his coaching staff must find a way to scheme in ways that protect Bradford while giving him a chance to make plays.

The Rams aren’t paying Bradford to sit, so they must devise protection plans that will preserve the health of their massive investment. St. Louis will have to get step-up performances from its corps of wide receivers and play in a way that’s suited to Bradford’s talents.

Rams 2010 Outlook

All in all, the season will be a success if Bradford ends it in relatively good health… and without an overly severe dose of humiliation.
