Seattle Seahawks vs. Denver Broncos Preview

The Pete Carroll era in the Great Northwest got off to a good start with a win in week 1 and now the Seattle Seahawks (1-0) head south to the Mile High City to face the Denver Broncos (0-1).

Seattle had question marks in their defense coming into the season, but they looked solid in their opening win over San Francisco only giving up 6 points and holding the 49ers scoreless in the second half as well as holding them to 1/15 on 3rd down conversions.

The Broncos lost in week 1 and while they had a good passing offense in the game they only rushed for 89 yards and they committed 2 turnovers. They got a little help for the rushing attack during the week trading for former 1st round draft pick RB Laurence Maroney, who never really panned out in New England.

In week 1 the Seahawks looked impressive in winning at home 31-6 against the San Francisco 49ers while the Broncos lost to the Jacksonville Jaguars 24-17.

The 49ers were the favorites to win the weak NFC West, but the Seahawks sent a message to the division that they may be THE team to beat this season.

Denver had a chance to win their game against Jacksonville, but they had 2 costly penalties on the Jaguars’ game winning drive and WR Brandon Lloyd could not get both feet down in the end zone on a 4th down pass late in the 4th quarter.

Heading into this game the Broncos are 0-1 ATS and the Seahawks are 1-0 ATS.

Seattle QB Matt Hasselbeck had a decent game in the win over the 49ers going 18/23 for 170 yards with 2 TD and 1 INT and he also ran for 1 TD. The Seahawks only rushed for 77 yards in the win over the 49ers averaging 3.3 yards per carry. However, Justin Forsett averaged 6.1 yards per carry with a long run of 32 yards in the game.

The Denver defense gave up 134 rushing yards against the Jaguars and they will have to play well in this game even though Seattle does not have the running game that Jacksonville does.

The Broncos pass rush was poor in week 1, as they only had 1 sack and did not pressure the QB much. They did not force any turnovers in the game and they will have to pressure Hasselbeck in the pocket or they will be in trouble. Football betting

The Broncos have to play better on special teams in this game, as they gave up a 53-yard kickoff return and a 17-yard punt return to the Jags and this week face Seattle return stud Leon Washington, who had a 41 yard kickoff return against the 49ers.

Denver QB Kyle Orton was 21/33 for 295 yards with 1 TD and 1 INT last week, but his one pick came with 1:50 left in the game, which sealed their doom. The offensive line of the Broncos will have to play better than they did last week, as the Jags sacked him 3 times and knocked 6 passes down.

The Broncos will need the RB’s, especially Knowshon Moreno (60 yards 1 TD last week), to pick up some yards on the ground, as it will make it easier for Orton to use the play action pass. If the Broncos struggle running the ball again Orton will have to put up big numbers for the Broncos to have any chance to win this game.

The Seattle secondary was terrible last season and in week 1 against San Francisco they gave up 214 passing yards, but did come up with a couple of key INT’s.

The Broncos have won 11 consecutive home openers, but it will not be 12 because the Seahawks will pull off the minor upset, as they will win this game and show they are a legit playoff contender in the NFC this season.

Trends:

Seattle is 1-8 ATS in their last 9 road games, 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games following an ATS and has an Under record of 4-1-1 in their last 6 road games.
Denver is 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games, 8-21-1 ATS in their last 30 home games, and in their last 6 games the total has gone Over every time.
In the last 6 games between these 2 teams the total has gone Over 5 times.

Pick: Seattle +3.5
