Seattle Seahawks (5-4)

A 5-4 team as an 11.5-point underdog? Even on the road, that’s a big slap in the face to the Seahawks by the oddsmakers. At least, it seems that way at first glance. In reality, the spread is about right.

The Seahawks are the inverse of the San Diego Chargers in that their numbers suggest they should be much worse than they are. They rank 30th in total offense, 23rd in passing, 28th in rushing, 28th in points per game, 27th in total defense and 28th in pass defense. It’s not like they’re even a ballhawk group that rescues itself via turnovers; Seattle has just seven interceptions all season.

The Seahawks have been decent against the run but that may only be because teams keep throwing on them. Seattle has done a decent job rushing the passer, however; its 26 sacks are sixth-best in the league. They got to Derek Anderson in last week’s road win over Arizona, sacking him five times, though he still threw for 322 yards against them.

New Orleans Saints (6-3)

That sound you hear? It’s people piling back onto the Saints’ bandwagon. The concerns over the bizarre losses to Arizona and Cleveland are now being attributed to Super Bowl hangover after the Saints made a huge statement against Pittsburgh on Halloween night before stomping on Carolina 34-3 the following week.

While they still haven’t had a particularly tough schedule, the effort against the Steelers validated the Saints’ third-ranked overall defense and top-ranked pass defense. Under co-ordinator Gregg Williams’ tutelage, the aggressive unit has forced 10 fumbles, scored two touchdowns and tallied 27 sacks.

Unless you believe in the rumors about his knee, Drew Brees seems to be turning his season around. After throwing eight picks in Weeks 5 to 7, he has four touchdown passes and two picks over his last two games. There’s a good chance he’ll get Reggie Bush (broken leg) back as a receiving option out of the backfield this week.

The pick:

You never know when a middling team will give New Orleans an unexpected challenge but I think the defending champs have turned a corner. They’re done getting caught napping and look poised to keep pummelling teams down the stretch. In two career starts against Seattle, Brees has a 96.1 passer rating, five touchdown passes and one interception while averaging 289 yards per game. I don’t suspect Seattle will pose much of a threat, especially with Matt Hasselbeck trying to play through a broken wrist on his non-throwing arm.

Trends:

SEA are 2-8 ATS vs. a team with a winning record.
SEA are 3-11 ATS in their last 14 road games.
Under is 8-0 in NO last 8 games in Week 11.
NO are 3-8 ATS in their last 11 games on fieldturf.
NO are 5-13 ATS in their last 18 vs. NFC.
