2011 Seattle Seahawks Team Preview | NFL Predictions

Yes, the Seattle Seahawks became the first-sub-.500 division champions in the NFL’s (almost) century-long history when they defeated the St. Louis Rams in the last game of the regular season.

2011 Seattle Seahawks Team Preview/Predictions
2010 Record: 7-9
ATS Record: 7-9

The Seahawks finished with a laughable 7-9 record and tied with St. Louis, but won the division crown thanks to a better division record than St. Louis, 4-2 compared to the Rams’ 3-3 mark.

The Seattle Seahawks are the defending NFC West champions but very few experts will consider them the favorites to repeat when the season gets underway. Winning the worst division in the National Football League not only hurt their draft position, but it also means they have to play two other division winners, the Atlanta Falcons and the Chicago Bears, in the upcoming season.

Good luck, Seattle.

You would think a team that won a division title and a playoff game would have several areas of strength, but this is the one exception to that rule. There’s not a single area of this team that doesn’t need help, which shows that the Hawks aren’t a perennial division champion.

Safety Earl Thomas had five interceptions during his rookie campaign and has the potential to be one of the best in the business, but the Seattle secondary as a unit allowed opposing signal callers to post an 89.69 QB rating. If there was one area of strength on this squad, it would have to be at the QB position. However, that is not saying much of anything at all. As a group the Seahawk quarterbacks had a paltry 72.04 QB rating, but at times Matt Hasselbeck showed that he still has what it takes to win in this league. The key for Hasselbeck and the Seattle team was when the Seahawks had a quarterback rating of at least 75. In those contests, the Seahawks were 5-2.

In games when Hasselbeck finished under 75, the Seahawks were 1-6. The key game for Hasselbeck came on the biggest stage of his team’s season, in the wild card game against the New Orleans Saints.

In the January showdown, the Seattle captain threw for 278 yards, four touchdowns, and amassed a quarterback rating of 113.

Now, however, Hasselbeck will not return to the Emerald City. Early in the period of free agent frenzy, the Seahawks decided to bring in Tarvaris Jackson to battle with Charlie Whitehurst for the starting quarterback position. Jackson clearly has the inside track for the job.

In terms of weaknesses, the Pete Carroll-led Seahawks struggled in more than one area. They labored in the attempt to establish the run. However, Marshawn Lynch had the highlight run of the year. (See the aforementioned wild card game against New Orleans). [soliloquy id=”82219″]

The Seahawks also used ten different offensive line combinations; they lacked the playmaking deep threat at the wide receiver position; they had a hard time stopping the run; and other than Thomas, their secondary did little to slow down other quarterbacks.

The backdrop of making the playoffs and winning a game in the wild card round is that the Seahawks had to draft at the 25th slot. The Hawks tried to improve their offensive line when they drafted two offensive linemen in the first two rounds.

Their first pick was guard James Carpenter from Alabama, and their second pick was another guard, John Moffitt from Wisconsin.
