Season Win Totals NFL Predictions – San Diego Chargers 2014 Lines

Chargers Over / Under Season Wins

The San Diego Chargers exorcised a lot of demons last season – actually winning a few games in December en route to a 9-7 record, a playoff berth and a first round playoff win over the Cincinnati Bengals.

Over Under Lines

  • Over 8 Wins (-130)
  • Under 8 Wins (even)

With the success from last year comes some heightened expectations that Philip Rivers and gang can take the next step and emerge into the “B level” of NFL teams.

Vegas has instilled an eight win season in Total for the San Diego Chargers – are they a .500 team are will they surprise the league, eclipse the 8-8 mark and get back into the playoffs again? Let’s break it down.

Vegas has it right – they see San Diego as a .500 team. My though is that they are indeed a team that could lose as many as they win – but they do have some upside. The first thing going against the Chargers is their schedule – the fourth toughest in the NFL this upcoming season.

Not only will they be challenged by the Broncos and the Chiefs within their own division the Chargers have a very tough slate of games – on the road and even at home.

The Chargers perhaps over-achieved offensively last season – they were fifth in total offense with 393 yards per game. It happened because Ryan Matthews stayed healthy and held onto the ball while Keenan Allen burst onto the scene as one of the most trustworthy pass catchers in the game.

Antonio Gates was healthy and the addition of Danny Woodhead injected a threat that hadn’t been seen in San Diego since Darren Sproles.

Translation – a lot went right for new Coach Mike McCoy and his squad – the return of Malcolm Floyd from injury should help this team at least maintain their high level of offensive play.

Defensively Dwight Freeney and Melvin Ingram provide a solid pass rush and the addition of perhaps the best pure athlete out of this year’s draft Jason Verrett at corner should make the Chargers defense formidable at least.

Verrett will join a squad that had its issues creating turnovers last year and a defense that was simply average across the board in 2013.

The San Diego Chargers should be a motivated team this upcoming season – Philip Rivers looked reborn last season and will likely not suffer much of a drop-off this season. One key for the Chargers are defense – if they can get above average play from this unit, a playoff spot certainly isn’t out of the question.

Another key is the running game – Matthews fumbled in the first preseason game and could revert back to his typical ways which would not be good for San Diego. Donald Brown was brought in this past offseason for a bit of insurance but Matthews is critical for San Diego’s success.

Betting Prediction:

As mentioned earlier the Chargers have a very tough schedule in 2014 – they will play every team in the uber-tough NFC West one time and will face the Chiefs and the Broncos two times apiece.

That said San Diego showed me a lot last year – that they may have gotten over a hump.

I like them to finish 9-7 again this year and sneak into the playoffs once again. Eight wins shouldn’t be a problem for San Diego as they continue an upward trend in 2014.
