Season Win Totals NFL Predictions – Carolina Panthers 2014 Lines

Panthers Over / Under Season Wins

The Carolina Panthers enjoyed a breakout season in 2013. All the talk of head coach Ron Rivera being on the hot seat entering the season was quickly put to rest with the team putting together a 12-win season, good enough to win the NFC South.

  • Panthers Lines un8.5 (-140)

The Panther defense took a major step forward last season, with everything really coming together at the right time for the team. In an offense-driven league, the Panthers were able to overcome their offensive shortcomings and ride their strong defensive play right to the postseason.

The unit was keyed by middle linebacker Luke Kuechly, who was named Defensive Player of the Year in just his second year in the league.

He’ll be back, but there will be some change around him. The safeties spots will now be occupied by veterans Roman Harper and Thomas DeCoud. Veteran cornerback Antoine Cason joins the fold in the secondary as well.

The defense will look to get to the quarterback with regularity again this season, and that starts with defensive ends Greg Hardy and Charles Johnson, who combined for 26 quarterback sacks a year ago.

The offense has taken a lot of criticism after allowing starting wideouts Steve Smith and Brandon LaFell walk. However, while there is a just about a wholesale turnover at the position, that unit looks to be improved from where it was a year ago.

First-round pick Kelvin Benjamin will lead the new group of wideouts. He’s being prepped to be the team’s No. 1 receiver, and could occupy that role for many years to come.

The unit will also feature veteran wide receivers Jason Avant and Jason Avant, who, while unspectacular, are reliable pass-catchers that Cam Newton will be able to lean on.

With all that said, the team’s offense will again live and die by the running game. DeAngelo Williams and Mike Tolbert are back to spearhead the group, but a returning Jonathan Stewart will be expecting some touches as well.

For all the positives, a major regression appears in order for the Panthers this season. This looks like a serious letdown situation for the team after they played out of their minds a year ago.

Panthers NFL Betting Prediction

The Panthers can be very proud of what they accomplished a year ago, but a return trip to the postseason seems unlikely given the current state of the NFC South, which features a New Orleans Saints team that has its sights set on the postseason, along with improving squads for the Atlanta Falcons and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, both of whom will have their sights set on the playoffs.

The NFC South figures to be one of the tougher divisions in football this season. 7-9 would be a good finish for this Panthers team.

The play: Under 8.5 (-140)
