This is a rematch of last season’s NFC divisional playoff game, which San Francisco won 36-32 on Alex Smith’s 14-yard touchdown pass to Vernon Davis with nine seconds left. Both teams looked very impressive in Week 11 and will be looking to advance their positions in the NFC with yet another victory.

The San Francisco 49ers were forced to start Colin Kaepernick last week at quarterback and it paid off! Kaepernick impressed in his first career start, going 16 of 23 for 243 yards with two touchdowns and no turnovers against a Bears defense that had forced 30 in its first nine games.

This week Alex Smith is healthy but Coach Jim Harbaugh has named Kaepernick starter for this week too. Smart move? I am not sure!

The 49ers enter Sunday’s game with the 27th ranked passing game in the NFL – Smith was certainly not lighting it up! The 49ers also own the league’s #1 rushing offense with an average of 165.30 yards per game. Kaepernick would seem on paper to help in both aspects of the game so it may actually be a good move!

Defensively, the 49ers have been massive – Aldon Smith had 5 1/2 sacks all by himself last week! They allow just 13.40 points per game – best in the NFL, 182.90 yards per game through the air – second in the league and 94.30 yards rushing per game – 6th in the NFL. San Francisco will need every bit of their stout defense against a Saints team that is clicking at the moment!

The Saints hit the elusive .500 mark with their 38-17 win at Oakland last week – truth be told I didn’t think they would get there this season! Against Oakland, Drew Brees was an efficient 21 of 28 for 229 yards while running backs Mark Ingram and Chris Ivory combined for over 100 yards on the ground and the defense, yes the defense actually chipped in with an interception return touchdown!

For the Saints, offense hasn’t been a problem this year – they are 4th in the league in scoring (28.70 points per game), they are the #2 passing team but are the 26th ranked rushing team in the league. The running game is getting better which takes some of the pressure off of Drew Brees.[soliloquy id=”82219″]

The Saints defense has been the problem this year but they seem to be figuring a few things out as of late and are maybe a tad, just a tad better than their numbers suggest. New Orleans is dead last versus the run (157.80 yards per game), they are 31st versus the pass (305 yards per game) and they give up 27.30 points per game – 27th in the NFL. WOW!

Betting Prediction

• San Francisco is 5-1 SU in its last 6 games on the road
• The total has gone UNDER in 7 of San Francisco’s last 9 games when playing on the road against New Orleans
• San Francisco19-5-1 SU in its last 25 games
• The total has gone OVER in 5 of San Francisco’s last 7 games when playing New Orleans
• New Orleans is 12-2 SU in its last 14 games at home
• New Orleans is 6-1 SU in its last 7 games when playing San Francisco
• New Orleans is 6-1 SU in its last 7 games when playing at home against San Francisco
• New Orleans is 5-1 SU in its last 6 games

The Saints are certainly on a role but they have been getting it done lately against Swiss cheese defenses. The 49ers will be by far their biggest test in quite some time! The bottom line is the San Francisco can count on their defense for the occasional stop – New Orleans can’t.

I look at what San Francisco did against Chicago’s top defense last week and can’t help but think they put up a bunch of points this week. The 49ers score a lot this week, the Saints score some!

Pick: San Francisco 49ers
