Green Bay vs San Francisco Betting?

Headline: 49ers Host Packers for Right to Play for NFC Crown

The San Francisco 49ers and the Green Bay Packers meet on Saturday night in a game that most people expected before this season started. Two of the best teams heading into 2012/2013 the Niners and the Packers have each looked like dominant forces at times during the year – for the 49ers they looked untouchable early and toward the middle of the season.

For the Packers they certainly looked like the team to beat in the NFL down the stretch. Green Bay will be looking to avenge a Week 1 loss against these same 49ers – 30-22 when the Niners were absolutely on top of their game and the Packers were starting a stretch in which they struggled mightily.

But that was then, this is now!

The biggest storyline for the Green Bay Packers this season has unquestionably been their ability to float despite injuries on both sides of the ball. Now with healthy players back on offense and on defense the Pack look poised to ascend to the top – right where most had pegged them before the season started.

The Green Bay Packers, if they are going to get it done Saturday will have to ride Aaron Rodgers to nobody’s surprise. The Packers likely won’t have much success with their 20th ranked run game against the 49ers stout 4th best run defense. DuJuan Harris, Ryan Grant and John Kuhn may get a short score or two but they will likely be more integral in keeping San Francisco’s furious pass rush honest and to limit the inevitable pressure that is certain to be heaped upon Aaron Rodgers in this game – the O-line has allowed 51 sacks already this season.

That said Aaron Rodgers and the 9th best NFL passing game should be able to do some damage. Healthy again, Rodgers will have Greg Jennings, Randall Cobb, Jordy Nelson and James Jones at his disposal – scary! Rodgers has looked better and better as the season has rolled on but faces a tough challenge in San Francisco’s top tier defense. Nobody has stopped Rodgers and company lately – slowing them is about the best you can hope for.

Green Bay’s defense entered last week with a ton of question marks but as all good teams do -they made adjustments and largely shut down Minnesota’s only viable weapon, Adrian Peterson. The Packers enter Sunday’s game with the 11th best NFL pass defense and they are 17th against the run. Green Bay is as healthy as they have been all season on the defensive side of the ball – just the return of Charles Woodson has made this team a whole lot more formidable on “D”.

The San Francisco 49ers are a team in transition – weird to say about a team that gained a first round bye and finished atop the NFC West! Alex Smith is out and the largely inexperience Colin Kaepernick will lead the 49ers into Saturday’s game hoping that the lack of experience won’t be a factor. As always, San Francisco will rely on its running game and the defense to get them past their biggest challenge of the season so far.

The 49ers offense will pound the ball with their 4th ranked rushing attack – no doubt. The Packers had looked vulnerable in their run defense before last week when they held Adrian Peterson to 99 yards. Frank Gore ran for 112 yards on 17 carries in Week 1 versus the Packers – expect more of the same. The rushers will act to chew up some yards and some clock and will be responsible for keeping the Green Bay offense on the sidelines. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

San Francisco’s finished 23rd in the NFL in passing but Colin Kaepernick’s multi-pronged attack has made this unit as dangerous as they have been in a while. If Kaepernick is throwing however, we will know that the 49ers are not executing their game plan to the fullest!

San Francisco’s defense has been absolutely top notch all season long – 4th against the pass, 4th versus the run and allowing just 17.06 points per game – second in the NFL. Names like Aldon Smith, Justin Smith, Patrick Willis and NaVorro Bowman are menacing figures and could be the difference against Green Bay’s shaky offensive line.

Betting Prediction:

A few trends to consider:

•Green Bay is 8-1 SU in its last 9 games when playing San Francisco
•Green Bay is 6-0-1 ATS in its last 7 games when playing on the road against San Francisco
•Green Bay is 6-1 SU in its last 7 games when playing on the road against San Francisco
•Green Bay is 5-1 SU in its last 6 games
•The total has gone OVER in 7 of San Francisco’s last 8 games
•San Francisco13-2-1 SU in its last 16 games at home
•The total has gone OVER in 4 of San Francisco’s last 5 games when playing Green Bay
•The total has gone OVER in 4 of San Francisco’s last 5 games at home

On paper, these two teams are arguably the best two in the NFL. But if you look at which team has the best player it is Green Bay with Aaron Rodgers. Healthy at just the right time, the Packers are a far cry from the team that fell to San Francisco in Week 1. The Packers will have their hands full keeping Aaron Rodgers on his feet but if there is one player that can get it done single-handedly, it is Mr. Rodgers. Green Bay will score – the 49ers won’t keep up – I like the road team to get it done!

Pick: Green Bay Packers +3
