Since back to back losses to Dallas and Philadelphia in early Niovember, the Philadelphia Eagles have won four straight and are starting to flex their muscles as one of the powerhouse teams in the NFL. The eagles offense has been without Brian westbrook who has been Mr. Everything for the Eagles offense for the past several years. He’s been replaced at his position on the field by LeSean McCoy but no matter how talented and promising mcCoy is, you just can’t replace a Brian Westbrook. All of the Eagles offensive players seem to be stepping up including back up QB Mike VIck who is getting better and better ach game. The receiving corps continues to impress, especially DeSean jackson and tight end Brent Celek. The Eagles defense is built and read for playoff style football as they have a secondary who can cover in man coverage and a defensive line who can apply a pass rush. In a word, the Eagles defense is punishing.

The San Francisco 49ers created and then took advantage of turnovers to sweep divsional rival Arizona. It was a slaughter from the outset and it made you wonder where the 49ers would be if they had a solid QB or if they had held on for wins in three of their losses which all happened in the last 30 seconds of play. Frank Gore took advantage of the national spotlight to show once again that when it is being discussed who is the best running back and even best offensive player in the NFL, his name should definitely be part of the discussion. Gore gouged the Cardinal defense. Alez Smith often looks lost out there and seems to make a lot of mistakes but his numbers indicate otherwise. Smith has a passer rating of 83.3 and he has 15 touchdowns with nine interceptions.

Though the offense is improving and is a better unit since the signing of first round pick Michael Crabtree, this team is based on defense. Last week the secondary proved they could play with anyone as they smothered the Arizona wide receivers and made Kurt Warner look ordinary. They will need another big showing to be competitive in this game.

Philadelphia is 4-1 against the spread in their last five games as a favorite of 3 1/2 to 10 points, 7-3 against the spreadn their last 10 as a home favorite, and 5-2 against the spread when playing a team with a losing record. San Francisco is 8-1-2 against the spread when playing a team with a winning record, 6-0-1 against the spread as an underdog of 3 1/2 to 10 points, and 3-1-2 against the spread in their last six road games.

San Francisco doesn’t get a lot of credit but they have thre losses which they were winning until late. Both of these teams have covered eight times this season, the only difference is the Eagles have 5 non covers while the Niners have three and two pushes. I think Philadelphia is a very good team and deep enough to make a run in the playoffs and if they were to get to the Super Bowl, I’m not sure anyone would be shocked. In this game though, this line looks to be way to generous.
