San Francisco 49ers vs. Green Bay Packers Preview
In a big NFC match up between a couple of teams that really need a win the Green Bay Packers (7-4) host the San Francisco 49ers (4-7). NFL lines have the Packers as big 9.5-point favorites with a total of 41.5.
In their last games the Packers lost to the Atlanta Falcons 20-17 while the 49ers looked very impressive beating the Arizona Cardinals 27-6.
This season the Packers have been a solid home team (4-1) while the 49ers have been far from a good team on the road (1-4). Green Bay has won 13 of their last 14 games against San Francisco and their last 7 in the frozen tundra of Lambeau Field.
The 49ers are 3 games below .500, but they play in the weak NFC West and only trail Seattle and St. Louis by 1 game. They will have to push through without their main offensive weapon for the remainder of the season since RB Frank Gore was lost for the year to a recent hip injury. That is a big blow to San Francisco, who has had problems on offense this season, but luckily their defense is starting to play well.
While the 49ers lost their leading rusher Frank Gore the Packers have been without their featured back of Ryan Grant, who was lost for the season in the first game. QB Aaron Rodgers has played great and has had to carry most of the load since the Green Bay rushing offense only ranks 23rd in the league. They will likely not improve on their ranking in this game facing the strength of the San Francisco D, which is defending the run.
Heading into this NFC match up San Francisco is 4-7 ATS and Green Bay is 6-5 ATS. San Francisco is 1-4-1 ATS in their last 6 games in Green Bay.
Since Troy Smith became the starter for the 49ers they have won 3 of their last 4 games and while he only passed for 129 yards in the win over Arizona last week he did throw 1 TD and 1 INT. He may be asked to air it out more often in this game if the 49ers cannot run the ball and if they get down to the Packers early. The Green Bay defense has been solid against the pass this season, as their pass D ranks 10th in the league. If the Packers’ D can pressure Smith and keep TE Vernon Davis and WR Michael Crabtree from making the big plays down the field they will have a much better chance to win this game.
With Gore out backup RB Michael Westbrook showed he still has some gas left in the tank rushing for 136 yards with 1 TD averaging 5.9 yards per carry last week against Arizona. If he can run the ball well again it will take a lot of pressure off Smith. That is a good possibility, as the Green Bay rushing D has struggled all season ranking 18th in the league. Last week in the loss to Atlanta they gave up 117 rushing yards.
Can Aaron Rodgers get any help in this game? He will be looking for the 3rd straight 300+ passing yards game in his career this Sunday and he may have to get it for the Packers to win. Green Bay’s rushing offense has not cracked the 100-yard barrier in 5 of their last 6 games and in that span the Packers are only averaging 3.5 yards per carry. Rodgers has a legit WR corps with the likes of Greg Jennings (51 rec 822 yards 9 TD) and James Jones (35 rec 502 yards 3 TD) and if San Fran and their 16th ranked pass D can shut these guys down they have a legit chance for an upset.
Frank Gore is out, but I think that Troy Smith will have a good game and Westbrook will break 100-yards again. However, Rodgers will show, once again, that he is among the best QB’s in the league and lead the Packers to a win. It will not be easy though and the 49ers will keep it close and they will cover the spread.
