San Diego Chargers vs. Seattle Seahawks Preview

In a non-conference match up in the Great Northwest between a couple of 1-1 teams the Seattle Seahawks host the San Diego Chargers. NFL betting lines have the Chargers as 5.5-point favorites in this game with a total of 44.

Seattle fell back to earth last week getting beat thoroughly after playing so well in their opening game of the season. They played a sloppy game last week with committing 4 turnovers, 3 INT’s, which is not good facing a Chargers’ secondary that picked off 4 passes in their win last week.

The Chargers looked like themselves in putting up 38 points in their last game and were also much better on defense than in their season opener only allowing 13 points to Jacksonville. Phillip Rivers had a big game and he will be tough to stop on Sunday in Seattle.

San Diego has won their last 5 games against teams from the NFC.

Seattle will be without starting LB Leroy Hill for this game due to a calf injury and San Diego may be without starting rookie RB Ryan Mathews, who has an injured ankle. If Mathews can’t go it may really hurt the Chargers since Phillip Rivers is a much better QB when San Diego has a ground game.

In their last games the Seahawks were crushed by the Denver Broncos 31-14 and the Chargers looked great on both sides of the ball in their 38-13 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The Chargers and their dynamic offense are led by Phillip Rivers, who was solid in the win over the Jaguars last week going 22/29 for 334 yards with 3 TD and 2 INT. Even without the suspended WR Vincent Jackson the Chargers still have a good core of receivers, especially TE Antonio Gates.

The Seahawks pass defense has not played well in the early part of the season, as they rank 26th in the league and in last week’s loss to Denver gave up 304 passing yards. They will have to shore up their secondary or their front line D will have to pressure Rivers all game or Seattle may be in a for a long day. Football betting

If RB Ryan Mathews can’t go FB Mike Tolbert will get the start in the backfield and he played well last week rushing for 82 yards averaging a legit 5.1 yards per carry.

While the Seahawks pass defense is weak their run defense is strong ranking 5th in the league and they only gave up 67 yards in the loss to the Broncos.

Seattle QB Matt Hasselbeck would like to forget the game against Denver last week and even though he passed for 233 yards and 1 TD he threw 3 interceptions. He will be facing a much-improved Chargers’ pass defense that ranks 8th in the league. There are a few ball-hawks in the San Diego secondary and Hasselbeck has to not make errant throws or the Chargers will make him pay.

Seattle’s rushing offense has been decent this season and they had 109 rushing yards last week and they will be facing a San Diego rushing defense that ranks 11th in the league and played great last week only allowing the Jaguars to run for 71 yards.

This game is not a good match up for the Seahawks since the Chargers’ passing offense is so good and the Seahawks pass defense is pretty poor. If the Seahawks play like they did last week they will get killed and while I think they will not play poorly at home the Chargers simply have too many weapons on offense, as they will win this game and over the spread.

Trends:

San Diego is 5-2 ATS in their last 7 road games, 1-4-1 ATS in their last 6 games as a favorite, and has an Over record of 5-2 in their last 7 games when they are the favorite.
Seattle is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 home games, 3-10 ATS in their last 13 games as an underdog, and has an Under record of 3-0-1 in their last 4 home games.

Pick: Chargers -5 ½

Jason did OK last week going 4-4 for the week in the college game and while he has yet to be below .500 for any of the 3 weeks he wishes the Redskins could have played some D against the Texans in losing their first game of the season to the Lone Star State.
