Chargers vs Bucs NFL Football Spread/Handicapping

After 6 of the worst quarters of football San Diego jumped out of their funk in beating the Kansas City Chiefs last week. Now they are off to Tampa for the first of two on the road and a three game stint against teams with .500 records or better.

San Diego

They are alive in the AFC West just a game behind rival Denver who they play next week.  This team that often disappoints has to keep their eyes focused on what is directly ahead of them or else they will lose another game they can’t afford.

The Chargers offense has been unpredictable this year.

Last week they scored 31 points but the week before could muster only 6 against Cleveland.  They need Phillip Rivers to get back to being one of the most underrated QBs in the game instead of the guy who threw 20 picks last year and is on pace to do so again. Last week he completed 18 of 20…it was actually 19 though as was intercepted once by the Chiefs.

The Chargers probably have more talent than Tampa but that has never meant a sure thing for San Diego.  This team has been even Stevens this year with a 2-2 SU and ATS record at home and on the road.  They have been stingy against the run which is why I think they can have success against Tampa on Sunday. Tampa Bay

The Bucs have made it through the first half of the season with a chance to exceed expectations.  They have won their last two to even their record at 4-4 and are in the NFC Wild Card race.  They have also been a breadwinner with their 6-2 ATS record including a perfect 4-0 on the road.  Injuries are building but if last week showed anything they may not be as much of a hindrance as originally feared.

With guards Carl Nicks and Davin Joseph on IR the running game was supposed to take a big hit.  Instead rookie Doug Martin ripped off an epic performance with 251 yards at Oakland last week.  That made it easy for QB Josh Freeman to take what the defense gave him and then strike for some big plays.  It is just what new coach Greg Schiano has in mind and against a mediocre foe like San Diego should work.

Both teams are going to be gunning for a win to start the second half and stay on the good side .500 to stay in playoff races so even though this is an inter-conference contest there should be some juice on the field.  Tampa was maybe too good last week and I just don’t seeing them back it up with another high level effort.
