Week 9 NFL Spreads: Chargers vs. Giants

Point spread, ATS odds, and moneyline betting and preview article for the 2009 Week 9 Sunday football NFL clash between the San Diego Chargers and the N.Y. Giants…

NFL WEEK 9 – San Diego Chargers vs. N.Y. Giants

It’s fish-or-cut-bait time in San Diego, where the Chargers are planning for the most important two games of the season. Battles against the Giants this Sunday and Philadelphia a week from then will pretty much determine whether San Diego has the stones to stay within shouting distance of first-place Denver (or at least a playoff berth) in the AFC West.

San Diego owns four wins this season, but all of them (Oakland twice, Kansas City and Miami) have come against under-.500 teams, and the Giants and Eagles are both formidable obstacles to the Chargers’ effort to pick up ground on the 7-1 Broncos.

There are some signs of life in the Charger’s camp. LaDainian Tomlinson had a decent running effort against the Raiders last week, the offensive line showed some signs of at least being interested in blocking, and Shawne Merriman had a couple of sacks and appears back to his old quarterback-destroying self.

A victory in the Meadowlands could do a lot for San Diego’s fragile psyche. The Chargers’ wave may have crested with that improbable playoff win in Indianapolis last season; since that day San Diego has not beaten a decent team, and the spotlight is shining brightly on coach Norv Turner and his conservative offense.

Questions also are being asked about the Giants, who have allowed 112 points in the last three games (all losses) and are falling like a rock in the NFC East. To be fair, the three losses (New Orleans, Arizona, Philadelphia) all came against quality teams, but that’s little comfort to those backing the Giants with their wallets.Sports Betting at Sportsbook.com

The Giants have sprung so many leaks that’s it hard to pinpoint a single culprit:

***The secondary is ravaged by injuries. Philly’s DeShaun Jackson was barely covered on Sunday, and had a field day.

***The running game is going nowhere fast, as defenses have realized that if they can stop Ahmad Bradshaw and Brandon Jacobs, it will make things impossible for . . .

***. . . Eli Manning. Manning claims that his right foot is completely healed, but the stats – five interceptions in the last two games – indicate otherwise. Plus, the kid appears too confused and just doesn’t look like the same guy who quarterbacked the Giants to the Super Bowl win over New England.

Whatever the reason, New York has fallen from 5-0 to 5-3 and is sucking serious wind as it continues a brutal stretch in which by Dec. 13 will have seen them play 8 consecutive games against teams with winning records.

As if things aren’t bad enough for the Giants, NFC East rivals Philadelphia and Dallas appear to be hitting the accelerator as the season tees off on the back nine.Comment on this game below, hit us with your pregame NFL picks and predictions…

The G-Men will be in big trouble if they lose a fourth game in a row heading into their bye week. San Diego can get back in the AFC West race with a win combined with a Denver loss agianst Pittsburgh on Monday night. This should be a good one that comes down to the wire.
