San Diego Chargers Super Bowl XLIX Betting Lines & 2014 NFL Preview

2014 San Diego Predictions

The San Diego Chargers endured a season in which their success was on the arm of their Pro Bowl quarterback Phillip Rivers. Ranking 4th in total passing yards at 270.5 yards per game, the aerial attack of the Chargers was in full effect and their addition of first year head coach Mike McCoy paid off.

2013 Record: 9-7
ATS: 9-6-1
Chargers odds to win the 2014 AFC West Division: +500
Chargers odds to win the 2014 AFC Championship: 18-1
Chargers odds to win the 2014 Super Bowl: 40-1

Let’s take a look at the numbers

A former quarterback coach, McCoy worked with Rivers to bring back the gunslinger mentality, which in return lead them to a road playoff victory.

The addition of McCoy really proved to pay huge dividends in year one. He revitalized the offense and provided the balance that the Chargers were lacking.

San Diego with Rivers at the realm have been known to air the ball out, but McCoy implemented balance with the rushing attack.

The Chargers relied on a career year from RB Ryan Mathews and averaged 122.8 yards rushing yards per game. The balance offensive attack was good enough for 5th in the league at 393.3 total yards per game and come playoff time, they relied on the balance attack for a road playoff victory.

Looking to expand on that offensive success, San Diego drafted G Chris Watt looking to build around Rivers and the team’s resurrected offensive success.

Meanwhile, the defensive side of the ball , was the weak link in the Chargers armor.

Playing in a tough division and facing Denver’s Peyton Manning twice, the Chargers were 29th in passing yards allowed at 258.7 yards per game.

The San Diego secondary was not able to keep up with the wide open offensive passing attacks of key teams in route to losing to the Broncos in the playoffs.

Knowing that in order to reach the AFC championship, the Chargers needed to figure out a way to shore up their secondary, and added five key members to the defensive side of the ball by using their first draft pick on CB Jason Verrett from TCU.

Also looking to add another CB, the Chargers signed Brandon Flowers hoping he can continue to bring his hard nose physical defense to a secondary that needs to fix things if they are to succeed.

Chargers Betting Outlook:

The Chargers went 9-6-1 last year ATS and 7-9 O/U. They were a team that started off slowly, only to finish very strong covering in five straight games.

Once the Chargers found their identity, their betting success started to take off.

Playing in the AFC West, possession is still key as offensive attacks are so strong that the best defense, is to keep your offense on the field.

The Chargers turned the corner last year with their success and now they must build on it.

Look for the Chargers to go 10-6 and be in there for a top team ATS.
