When these two red, white and blue clad clubs hook up, there’s usually something big on the line. The Lombardi Trophy will not be in the building on August 28th when the Pats and Giants square off but that won’t stop us from breaking down this tilt to close out the NFL preseason.

Giants

The G-men have rolled through the preseason without a loss to this point and have already dispatched of two members of the AFC East (Bills, Jets), the division that the Patriots have ruled over for the better part of the last decade.

Not all of the Giants’ victories this preseason have been by the book however, as they mounted an improbably comeback against the Colts two weeks ago after trailing 26-0 early in the fourth quarter, only to have most of their depth players erase that deficit by scoring 27 unanswered points, capped off with a TD pass by QB Ryan Nassib with just 55 ticks left on the game clock.

Starting QB Eli Manning was productive last week against the Jets, going 12 for 21 including two touchdowns and 137 yards.

Ex-Raider and Jaguar running back Rashad Jennings has been solid in the run game for the Giants this preseason and continued his productivity last week with very tidy 67 yards on 13 carries (5.2 yds/carry).

Patriots

The Pats are always a team whose preseason you take with a grain of salt. Bill Belichick and Tom Brady have been a perennial Super Bowl contender for what seems like an eternity and it’s no different this year, as they’re currently sitting at 8/1 odds to win the Super Bowl.

Their 2-1-0 record includes a 23-9 loss to the Redskins, but as mentioned, this team knows how to win when it matters and their performance in preseason is often meaningless.

Having said that, Tom Brady has been Tom Brady even when the games don’t matter, and has put together very Brady-esque numbers in his two appearances in exhibition play, even at 37 years of age.

The face of the Patriots has completed 25 of 31 passes this preseason for 285 yards and three touchdowns to go with one interception.

In last week’s match up against the Carolina Panthers, Brady was outstanding, completing 17 of 21 passes for 201 yards and two TDs on the way to a 30-7 beat down the Pats put on the Cats.

Brady doesn’t figure to see as much action this week, as he has showed last week that he’s already in regular season form. Look for QB Ryan Mallet to split time with Jimmy Garoppolo this week and Shane Vareen and Steven Ridley to share carries in the backfield.

WEEK 4 NFL-X Giants vs Patriots Free Pick

The Giants wrap up their perfect preseason with a win at home in this one. I don’t figure Bill Belichick to tip his hand too much in a meaningless game, nor risk injury to his franchise QB.

The run game will be the difference in this one as I don’t think Eli Manning will see much time under centre either and the Giants run game has been the better of the two this preseason.
