St. Louis vs Carolina NFL Football Spread/Handicapping

The Rams caused a stir last week when they dominated the Houston Texans. All offseason long they have been saying they were a team on the come but prior to that we really hadn’t seen it and I am still not sure this team has the potential to be good.

Their opponent this week, again on the road, is the Carolina Panthers, who are probably better than their 2-3 record indicates.

The winner of this one might be factor in the Wild Card race in the NFC though that is probably a stretch.

St. Louis

If the Rams are going to make something of their season they absolutely have to take this game. They play in a tough division and still have 5 games left on the schedule against Seattle, San Francisco, Indianapolis and New Orleans – all likely to be in the playoffs.

The Rams were supposed to be better this year because of an improved offense and a better than you think D. The offense has not been very good at piling up yards – 30th – but they are 15th in points, an odd spread which indicated some degree of luck.

The defense with the young hungry pass rushers is in the bottom third of the league in points allowed and only about the middle in sacks. This might be a game for them to break out a little bit as they have about half the sacks of league leading KC. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Speaking of breaking out where is top pick WR Tavon Austin. He leads the team in catches but is averaging less than 7 yards per grab. Ugly.

Carolina

Similar to when I was writing about the Washington offense I was surprised when I saw the numbers on the Carolina defense, which is in the top 7 in all major categories and most importantly second in points allowed. They are achieving those numbers without anyone one player really standing out so far though they do have stars on that side of the ball in LB Luke Kuechly, LB Thomas Davis and DE Greg Hardy.

If the defense can remain strong that takes a lot of pressure off of QB Cam Newton, who is never going to be the kind of passer some who can just pick a defense apart. If he has to make just a few big plays every game for them to win he can do that. Its when they are asking him to repeatedly lead extended drives that things are going to break down because ultimately he will make a mistake.

One of these teams is going to confirm opinions on Sunday. My bet is on the home team.

Spread Pick: Carolina -6.5
O/U Pick: Under
Score Prediction: Carolina 20 – St. Louis 10
