Detroit frittered away every chance to assure a playoff spot and now the final week of the season against Minnesota is totally meaningless…and it looks like their coach is likely to be fired.

There is no doubt that they are far more talented than the Vikings but football is a hard game to play if you are not emotionally invested and I am not sure you can count on the Lions to be right that way for the final week of the season.

Detroit

Week after week, with so much to play for, the Detroit Lions just couldn’t get it done…which is why head coach Jim Schwartz is likely to be on the unemployment line come season’s end.

Still I was surprised that the Lions were not made the favourites in this game with their loaded offense and sometimes spectacular defense.

The Lions’ problem is that they always seemingly can’t get out of their own way. Whether it is inopportune turnovers, mindless penalties or coaching gaffes, they just seem to have a knack for shooting themselves in the foot and losing games as a result.

This season may have a sour taste but in the grand scheme of things it was an improvement from last year and with a few key pieces added this team should be among favourites to go from out of the playoffs to in next season.

I still like them to win on Sunday though. One last chance for disappointment, maybe.

Minnesota

The Vikings may be the favourite in this one but I can not recommend them with any confidence because it is not like they have any more to play for than Detroit does at this point, or are the better team. Last week they were hammered by the Bengals on the road and they still don’t have any answers at quarterback.

These teams met in week 1 and the Vikings lost by 10.

The Lions did a nice job on a fresh Adrian Peterson, limiting him to less than 100 yards. Sure they let him loose for a 78 yard TD but on 17 other carries he gained only 15 additional yards so the clearly know how to slow him down.

On defense the only good thing the Vikings did was not let Megatron beat them, but the rest of the team more than made up for that, especially RB Reggie Bush who had almost 200 yards of total offense.

If both of these teams play to their abilities than Minnesota is in trouble once again.

I really don’t know what the oddsmakers were thinking in making Minnesota the favourite. It just makes no sense.
