NFL Betting – Week 5 Picks

I bounced back with a nice Week 4 but Week 5 will be no easy task. Many of this week’s spreads look positively treacherous on paper. Let’s see if I can find some viable ones to try.

WEEK 4 ATS PICKS RECORD: 6-2
SEASONATS PICKS RECORD: 15-7

Philadelphia Eagles vs Buffalo Bills
Sunday, October 9, 1:00 p.m. ET
NFL betting favorite: Eagles -1.5

Who knew that Eagles/Bills would shape up to be a barn burner? This game has all the makings of a wild one. Though Buffalo slipped up last week, its loss to Cincy came against the NFL’s top-ranked defense so far. In their other three games, the Bills moved the ball just fine.

And we know right now that anyone can score on Philly. Look for Fred Jackson to have a huge day. That said, we should also expect a huge day from the Eagles’ offense. Despite their struggles overall, Philly has still flashed plenty of big-play ability with the Likes of Michael Vick, DeSean Jackson and LeSean McCoy. The Eagles’ “D” has been the problem, not their “O.”

I don’t think the Bills will have an answer for Vick. Whereas Philly will give up points, its defensive aggression may force a costly mistake or two out of Ryan Fitzpatrick, which will be just enough to win the game. Pick: Eagles -1.5

Kansas City Chiefs vs Indianapolis Colts
Sunday, October 9, 1:00 p.m. ET
NFL betting favorite: Colts -1

Even at home, I’m surprised to see the Colts favored here. Kansas City has played six good quarters in a row. It narrowly lost to the Chargers in San Diego and its passing game showed signs of life in a win over Minnesota last week. Instead of Phil Rivers or Adrian Peterson, the Chiefs’ defense must contend with Curtis Painter and Joseph Addai this week. Much easier task. Pick: Chiefs +1 [soliloquy id=”82219″]

New Orleans Saints @ Carolina Panthers
Sunday, October 9, 1:00 p.m. ET
NFL betting favorite: Saints -6

Another epic Cam Newton performance wouldn’t be surprising; through four weeks, it’s becoming the norm. But Drew Brees and the Saints offense have rolled so far this season, overshadowed by Newton, the Patriots and the Packers. If they can hang 30-plus points on Green Bay, Chicago and Houston, they should pound Carolina’s defense into dust. Even if the Panthers move the ball – and they will – it won’t be enough to stay within six points.

Pick: Saints -6

Chicago Bears @ Detroit Lions
Monday, October 10, 8:30 p.m. ET
NFL betting favorite: Lions -5.5

So far this season, the Chicago Bears’ defense hasn’t lived up to its reputation. In fact, the Monsters of the Midway are 31st in the NFL in total “D.” That doesn’t bode well against a seemingly unstoppable Lions offense. How do you prevent Matthew Stafford from connecting with Calvin Johnson on a touchdown pass when Megatron catches the ball even with two or three people covering him?

Also, Ndamukong Suh and Detroit’s front seven may keep Matt Forte from running wild, forcing the Bears lean on Jay Cutler. With his weak receiving corps and propensity for mental mistakes, he should pull a Tony Romo and help the Lions stay undefeated. Less than a touchdown seems reasonable to cover. Pick: Lions -5.5
