Headline: Heavyweight Showdown Sunday – Steelers visit Giants

Two of the more successful NFL franchises of the last decade meet in an important Week 9 game Sunday with the visiting team absolutely needing a win and the home team not exactly needing to claim victory in order to maintain their lead in what has turned out to be a weak NFL East. Both teams are coming off wins in Week 8 and will be looking to keep the momentum going.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have begun to look more like the Steelers that we thought they would be. Over .500 for the first time this year Pittsburgh appears to have worked out the kinks and has become a complete team once again with a balanced offensive attack and a defense that finds a way to become elite each and every year.

The Steelers have the 21st ranked rushing offense in the NFL but injuries and a revolving door has led to them finding an identity with their rushers. Enter Jonathan Dwyer who has looked good the starting role and should continue to get significant playing time going forward.

Pittsburgh has a real chance to exploit the Giants this week – New York is just 19th against the run.

Ben Roethlisberger continues to be the team leader, seemingly willing his team to victories this season. He has the Steelers 7th in the NFL in passing with 272 yards per game through the air. He has completed 66.8 percent of his passes with 14 touchdowns and just three interceptions while being sacked 13 times. With Antonio Brown, Mile Wallace and Heath Miller in the fold expect the passing to continue for the Steelers – it has become their bread and butter!

The Pittsburgh defense has also been hit by injuries this year but they are still formidable to say the least – #1 versus the pass allowing 182 yards per game and #9 against the run with 91.57 yards allowed per game.

The New York Giants almost blew it last week. But it likely serves as a good wake up call for them – teams aren’t going to roll over in the league – playing to the final whistle is critical in the NFL. The Giants are back at home this week with a three game lead in their division and looking like the elite team that many envisioned in the preseason.

Eli Manning has been terrific this season and has the Giants with the league’s #6 ranked passing offense. Hakeem Nicks is healthy, Martellus Bennett is a revelation and Victor Cruz just keeps clicking along. The Steelers are terrific against the pass – this should be a dandy matchup. The New York running game is certainly coming around. Ahmad Bradshaw has been banged up this year but finally appears healthy. The Giants own the 12th best rushing game in the league – a ranking that should improve along with the health of Mr. Bradshaw.

Surprisingly, New York’s defense has been the weak spot for the team. They are 26th against the pass allowing 273.50 yards per game and they are 19th against the run surrendering 113 yards per game. Health has been an issue here too – along with the players feeling better should come an improvement in those rankings.

Betting Prediction:

• The total has gone OVER in 4 of Pittsburgh’s last 5 games on the road
• The total has gone UNDER in 10 of Pittsburgh’s last 14 games
• Pittsburgh is 14-6 SU in its last 20 games
• Pittsburgh is 3-6 ATS in its last 9 games
• NY Giants are 6-1 SU in their last 7 games
• NY Giants are 5-1 SU in their last 6 games at home
• The total has gone UNDER in 11 of the NY Giants last 15 games
• The total has gone UNDER in 5 of the NY Giants last 7 games at home

This is a possible Super Bowl preview that we have the pleasure of witnessing on Sunday. Both teams are playing well but both feel that they can do better. In the end, in a duel of two of the best Big Game QBs of the last decade, I see this matchup coming down to a field goal of all things. New York`s game has been passing and the Steelers have been masterful at shutting down their opposition`s throwing. In a tight game, take the Steelers to ramp up their pass defense, to keep the game close and the team to cover the Spread.

Pick: Pittsburgh Steelers +3 1/2
