Pittsburgh Steelers (2-0)

Steelers fans have to be absolutely ecstatic right now. The early 2010 forecast was bleak with no Santonio Holmes, no Ben Roethlisberger and the Falcons and Titans on the schedule. But the Steelers persevered. Rashard Mendenhall carried them past Atlanta in Week 1; their “D” bottled up Chris Johnson and sent Vince Young to the bench on the road in Week 2.

Suddenly, the Steelers are unbeaten, have only two weeks until Big Ben returns and have a winnable matchup at Tampa Bay this weekend. The road does, however, get a bit harder now that backup quarterback Dennis Dixon is out. Dixon was competent over his one and a half starts, completing 68.8 per cent of his passes, but is sidelined with a knee injury.

Charlie Batch or Byron Leftwich will start in Dixon’s place this week. Sure, Leftwich has the better arm, but it doesn’t really matter who Mike Tomlin chooses. The bottom line is that the Steelers will run the ball this week. And run. And run some more. Mendenhall carried the ball 22 and 23 times in his first two games. That number should jump to 25-plus this week against a Bucs team allowing over 111 rushing yards per game.

The Steelers “D” looks unstoppable so far. It made Michael Turner and Chris Johnson look ordinary, so it’s frightening to imagine what James Harrison and the Pittsburgh front seven will do to Cadillac Williams, who shouldn’t even be an NFL starter.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2-0)

Three cheers for Tampa Bay, a team that may already have more wins than some bettors expected this season. The story early on has been Josh Freeman. The sophomore quarterback, who had major turnover woes last season, has four touchdown passes and just one pick with no fumbles over his first two games.

But, before we declare the Bucs contenders, let’s take a closer look. In Week 1, they beat the lowly Cleveland Browns at home. Barely. In Week 2, they got the tasty task of facing Matt Moore and the Carolina Panthers. Carolina also has no pass rush anymore with Julius Peppers gone. It sacked Freeman, a scrambler, zero times last week.

So, to summarize, the Bucs have faced Jake Delhomme and Matt Moore plus two cupcake defenses. I think it’s time for Freeman, who has completed just 55.8 per cent of his passes, to get a rude awakening.

The pick:

Even though the Bucs get another home game and get to face yet another backup-caliber quarterback (in this case, a third-stringer), everything else about this matchup looks nightmarish for Tampa Bay. Arguably, no defense has looked more impressive than Pittsburgh’s through two weeks. And the Steelers did their damage against two above-average offenses. I can’t imagine what they’ll do to the young Freeman – whose game is quite similar to Vince Young’s.

If Tampa surprises at home this week, it may finally make a believer out of me. But I’d advise you to take Pittsburgh’s line and run with it.
