Could the Pittsburgh Steelers be better than they were last year? That’s a tough bar to jump over for the Super Bowl Champs, but it’s hard to imagine them not contending the difficulty of their schedule last season.

Considering how this team came off of their last Super Bowl win – when head coach Bill Cowher moved on, franchise face Jerome Bettis retired, Ben Roethlisberger crashed a motorcycle and Santonio Holmes wasn’t arrested – it has been a very quiet offseason.

The offense returns virtually intact and adds Rashard Mendenhall, who played only four games as a rookie last year.

Four of the five offensive linemen were in their first seasons at their positions last year so they figure to be stronger with a year’s worth of experience.

On defense, it’s hard to find any holes. The Steelers linebacking corps is the best in the business while the defensive line is up there too.

The secondary would be the lone weak spot but considering how much pressure they generate up front, not many quarterbacks have enough time to expose this group. Also, while they might be weak in coverage, they are among the best in run support.

Unlike many Super Bowl champions in the salary cap era, the Steelers haven’t had many free agent or coaching losses. And after dealing with the toughest schedule in the NFL in 2008, an easier strength of opponents will only make the task of winning the division and returning to the playoffs all that much easier for Pittsburgh.

Look for them to compete with New England for the AFC this year.

Almost a consensus pick to get back to the Super Bowl this year has alot of questions going into the new campaign. Too many questions for me. The health concerns of Big Ben and fast Willie combined with the lack of upgrades on the O line knock the Steelers down a few notches. The D will undoubtedly propell the Steelers to yet another division crown, but as far as another Super Bowl, my gut tells me No.

Pittsburgh has the fortune or misfortune of playing in the most Jeckyll-Hyde division in football. They are the best team but they are only one injury away from finishing out of the playoffs. Mendenhall (Willie will help when he is healthy) and the defense should carry them to the division title but without the homefield the playoff run is short. 1st in the North.
