While all of the talk in the AFC playoff race has been focused on the Denver Broncos and the New York Jets battling for the final Wild Card spot, the media has overlooked another key contender in the Titans, which are also in the mix at 6-5.

Tennessee has managed to stay in the hunt despite alternating wins and losses through the past six weeks based on the strength of three straight victories earlier in the year, but will face another tough test this week in Buffalo.

Despite the fact that the Bills have now dropped four in a row, they gave the Jets a scare in a 28-24 loss last Sunday, and have already proven that they can win some big games this year. At 5-6, Buffalo is still technically very much in the AFC Wild Card picture, but if they are going to have any chance they will need to get things together this week. Unlike in the beginning of their season when it seemed the Bills were capitalizing on opponent’s mistakes and playing efficient football themselves, the past month has been a different story as the team simply isn’t executing their game plan. Part of the problem has been the loss of running back Fred Jackson, who was averaging 5.5 yards per carry before his injury, but an even greater part of the problem has been Ryan Fitzpatrick and his inability to move the ball consistently without turning it over. The Bills need Fitzpatrick to be their best player if they are going to win football games, and to this point he has not proven that he can handle that burden.

The same has been said about running back Chris Johnson so far this year, although he did top the 100-yard rushing mark when he registered 190 yards in a win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last week. Getting Johnson going could be the key to the Titans getting in to the playoffs, and he will get his share of carries against the league’s 21st ranked rush defense this week.

Tennessee has managed to stay under the radar while remaining in contention for an AFC Wild Card position, but another big performance from Johnson and a win this week could change where they stand in the media eye.
