The Indianapolis Colts have yet to put forth a complete game this season but they are still at 3-2 and are favored to be 4-2 heading into their bye. What stands in the way is the Washington Redskins, a team that is far-improved over last year’s version.

How Can Indianapolis Win?

The Colts are facing Mike Shanahan; they owned him when he was the head coach of the Denver Broncos.

The Colts have yet to put forth their best effort this season but there is ample reason to believe that it’s on the way. The Colts defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel last week, who knows how to slow the Colts down. This week, the Redskins will try to mimic the same game plan but they don’t have the chef and they don’t have the same ingredients.

Washington wins when their opponent’s make a lot of mistakes. The Colts are a team that takes good care of the football, so that likely won’t be an issue.

The Colts have some real advantages in the passing game in this contest. Their multiple receiver sets with Reggie Wayne, Austin Collie and Pierre Garcon should present plenty of problems for a thin secondary. On top of that, the Redskins will have to worry about Dallas Clark.

The Redskins have the 30th-ranked pass defense. Against Peyton Manning, that’s going to be the reason that sinks them.

How Can Washington Win?

Just do what they do: play smart, run the football and take advantage of opportunities.

It’s fairly clear that Shanahan isn’t working with a full deck here but he has enough to beat most teams – especially at home.

Donovan McNabb has been exactly what the doctor ordered for Washington as he has provided above-average quarterbacking and has been the unquestioned leader of the team.

For the Redskins to win, they have to get their running game going. As per usual, every team tries to run the ball and play keep away from Manning and Co., but the Redskins have to actually execute this play.

Ryan Torrain needs to have a big game for the Redskins to keep up with the Colts because if this turns into a passing shootout, we know who has the better weapons.

Outlook

The Redskins are a little banged up at a few key positions, which could be a big factor. Both of their offensive tackles are not 100%, which is a problem when facing Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis. Beyond that, linebacker Rocky McIntosh is recovering from a concussion and may miss the contest, which further thins a position where the Redskins don’t have much depth.

This is just a tough matchup for the Redskins. They are facing a team that doesn’t make many mistakes and has a stellar passing game. That preys on their very weaknesses, which is going to make it tough for them to keep up on Sunday night.
