St. Louis have been the victims of a tough schedule thus far, but they won’t have any excuses when they take on a poor Jacksonville team that is winless on the season, and has looked completely and utterly inept on offense.

The Rams have three losses on the season, but it’s tough to fault them for losses at Atlanta and Dallas, and they ran into a buzzsaw in the form of a San Francisco team coming off back-to-back losses last Thursday.

This game holds added meaning for the Rams, because after this contest they’ll go right back on the road for consecutive contests against the Texans and Panthers, making this contest a virtual must-win.

The Ram defense has done a good job of pressuring opposing quarterbacks, even if Robert Quinn has been credited with five of the team’s nine sacks, but the team’s secondary has given up nine passing touchdowns this year.

The Jacksonville offense continues to trot out Blaine Gabbert at quarterback, and Gabbert’s play seems to only further cement his inevitable loss of the starter’s role come the offseason, both because of his terrible play, and because his impact on the team’s record is bringing them closer and closer to clinching the top pick in the next NFL draft, which will allow the Jaguars to bring in his replacement.

The team’s offense has failed to score a touchdown in three of their four contests, and star running back Maurice Jones Drew has been missing in action. Gabbert may put together a better effort this season, returning to the scene of the crime – he was drafted out of Missouri.

Despite their offensive struggles, the Jaguars dealt away starting left tackle Eugene Monroe to the Ravens during the week, the kind of self-inflicted wound that’s become a trademark of the Jaguars in recent years. One positive though is that they’ll get back top wide receiver Justin Blackmon for this contest after he was suspended for the first four games of the regular year for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.

The Rams said all the right things in the offseason when they talked about replicating the offense that made Sam Bradford so successful at Oklahoma, bringing in weapons through the draft and boosting their offensive line, while also letting Steven Jackson walk through free agency, but the spread offense hasn’t worked out thus far. Things could turn around against a Jacksonville defense that ranks 30th in scoring defense in the NFL. The Rams should get something cooking when they have the ball, and don’t be surprised if the Jaguars break through for a couple scores of their own.
