The Chiefs are surely disappointed to see the month of September come to an end after reeling off four consecutive wins to start the season, and the Andy Reid-era.

Quarterback Alex Smith hasn’t made many mistakes as Kansas City’s quarterback, but we haven’t seen him play from behind yet. He might not have to do that in this contest either, but he surely will need to try and do a better job of finding Dwayne Bowe either way.

After receiving a big contract in the offseason, Bowe has been an afterthought in the Kansas City offense. The focus of the offense has been running back Jamaal Charles. In the team’s last game against the New York Giants, Charles racked up 65 yards on 18 carries, and added another 62 yards and a score on five receptions.

The Kansas City defense did a fine job against the Giant offense, but did have trouble stopping one man – Victor Cruz. Cruz brought in 10 balls for 164 yards against the Chiefs, including a 69-yard touchdown strike. Even still, the unit has been the best scoring defense in the league, allowing only 10.3 points per game. Linebacker Justin Houston has played a big role in that, tied for the NFL lead with 7.5 sacks.

Tennessee blew out the New York Giants in their last contest, but that win came at a price, as the team lost quarterback Jake Locker for several weeks with a hip injury. He’ll be replaced by former Bill Ryan Fitzpatrick in this contest. Fitzpatrick has started the last couple seasons for Buffalo, but his tenure in Western New York came to an end when the Bills drafted EJ Manuel in the first round of the NFL draft.

The Chiefs are tops in the league as far as scoring defense, but the Titans have been no slouch either, allowing the seventh fewest points on a per game basis, giving up just 17.3 points per game.

Both teams have compiled solid overall records, but it feels as if there’s a little more substance to what Kansas City has been able to do, while Tennessee has needed a little luck to get where they are. Last weekend’s 25-point beat down on the New York Jets helps to bring this spread down in Tennessee’s favor, but despite the records, this still feels like too big of a step up in class for the Titans.

The Titans are 2-8-1 ATS in their last 11 games versus opponents with a winning record.

The play: Kansas City -2.5
