The Eagles wanted to play fast, and they did just that, but Chip Kelly thinks they can play even faster, which should scare all teams on Philadelphia’s schedule this season. There was some obvious confusion at times on the Eagles sideline as they struggled to get the correct personnel onto the field, but as those kinks get worked out with time, the Eagles will just get better and better.

One of Chip Kelly’s goals entering this season had to be righting the ship with respect to Michael Vick, and he seemed to do just that in Week 1. Vick looked like his old self in Week 1, completing 15 of 25 passes for 203 yards and two scores, and adding another 56 rushing yards and an additional score.

LeSean McCoy also received a major boost in Kelly’s run-heavy attack, racking up 184 yards and a touchdown on 31 carries. As a whole, the Eagles rushed for 263 yards against a competent Redskins defense. DeSean Jackson was targeted heavily when the Eagles took to the air, hauling in seven passes for 104 yards and a score. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

On defense, the Eagles were better than many anticipated, and much of the thanks on that end belongs to veterans DeMeco Ryans and Cary Williams. Ryans compiled eight tackles and a sack, while Williams was a beast, racking up two tackles, a sack, and an athletic, highlight-reel interception.

That’s the positive, the negative is that the unit was picked apart by Robert Griffin III late in the game, and they allowed the Redskins to close the game on a 20-0 run that let Washington back into the game.

San Diego started their opener as well as they could have hoped. On the first play from scrimmage, the team intercepted a Matt Schaub pass, and on the play that followed, Philip Rivers hit Ryan Mathews up the right sideline for a score.

Getting Rivers back to playing at an elite level was Mike McCoy’s main task in the offseason, and while Rivers threw for four touchdowns, the jury is still out on that one. Rivers threw for only 195 yards in the game, completing less than half of his passes, and giving up a back-breaking interception for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. Another key piece that could use a kick in the pants is Ryan Mathews, who averaged only 2.5 yards per carry.

As for the San Diego defense, they’ve had better days. The unit looked fine in the first half, but they were picked apart by Schaub in the second half, and they allowed Houston to get into position for the eventual game-winning field goal. Keep in mind, the unit lost key veterans Quentin Jammer and Shaun Phillips in the offseason.

San Diego kept close with Houston in their opener, and maybe they should have come away with the win, but there were a lot of negatives coming out of their performance. Conversely, the Eagles look like the real deal. Chip Kelly’s offense looks like it’s going to change the NFL, and there’s still time to get in on the ground floor with this one.

The Chargers are 0-6 ATS in their last six games following an ATS win.

The play: Philadelphia -7
