The Chargers will need a win and some help along the way to qualify but look to be in a decent situation with the Chiefs locked as the #5 seed in the AFC with nothing to play for except momentum.

Sunday marks a rematch of perhaps the most exciting game in the NFL this year – in Week 12 when the Chargers won 41-38 at Arrowhead.

Coach Andy Reid has made a habit of resting his key players before the playoffs when there is little to play for. And although there has been no mention of how much his starters will play, best guess is that they last for about a quarter. That said the Chiefs could stand to get a little momentum going ahead of the playoffs – they have lost four of their last six games overall and they are coming off a game in which they were thoroughly dominated by an underwhelming Colts team.

Jamaal Charles has been outstanding rushing for 1,287 yards and 12 touchdowns and catching 70 passes with seven touchdowns – he likely will get the majority of the day off. Alex Smith has been solid but unspectacular this year – he may sit the majority of the game. Dwayne Bowe has been good, Dexter McCluster has emerged and the offensive line has been remarkable all season long – they may get a good portion of the game off Sunday.

If they were guaranteed to play the whole game, Sunday’s outcome would be much easier to call.

The Kansas City offense is averaging 27.1 points and 337.6 yards per game while defensively they are allowing 18.5 points and 365.3 yards per game. The defense has been terrific this year but injuries have crept into the equation lately meaning that a host of those players could get a lot of this game off as well.

The San Diego Chargers have a lot to play for – a playoff position is on the line but they must win and a few teams have to lose. One interesting not is that the games that have implications on San Diego’s playoff positioning will be over when the Chargers hit the field for their game.

Chargers average 24.6 points and 392.5 yards per game – the offense has been good all season long thanks to Philip Rivers who has elevated his game to elite status again, a healthy Ryan Matthews who has rushed for 1,111 yards, Danny Woodhead who has acted as their Darren Sproles and some rookie receiver named Keenan Allen who looks like the next big thing in the NFL. San Diego will score points as they did in the first matchup – it is up to the Charger defense to hold the Chiefs in check.

Defensively San Diego is allowing 21.6 points and 368.8 yards per game – not bad. They will likely have the benefit of playing a bunch of second stringers Sunday which could make them look a whole lot better.

Week 17 Football Betting Prediction

A few trends to consider:

• Under is 9-2-1 in KC last 12 games in Week 17.
• KC are 2-6 ATS in their last 8 games in December.
• KC are 2-6 ATS in their last 8 games on grass.
• Under is 9-1 in SD last 10 vs. AFC.
• SD are 6-2 ATS vs. a team with a winning record.
• Under is 8-3 in SD last 11 games overall.

The San Diego Chargers have beaten the Chiefs and the Broncos on the road the last month to get themselves into position to qualify for the post season. They should win Sunday against a Chiefs team that will likely sit a lot of their starters for a good portion of the game.

But how much will they win by? My thought is that this game remains close – even the Chiefs backups will want to help the team avenge their Week 12 loss against San Diego and the backups would love nothing more than to create a little momentum for their team going forward. If Baltimore or Miami have already won by the time these teams take the field meaning all of the wind will be taken out of San Diego’s sails.

Pick: Kansas City Chiefs to cover the 9 1/2
