The Philadelphia Eagles are perennially one of the most consistent teams in the NFC but they are also consistently falling short of the Super Bowl. The breaks seem to go their way last year and considering they didn’t take advantage, one has to wonder if their window of opportunity has closed.

While there aren’t no talent questions about the Eagles offense, there are strategic issues. Head coach Andy Reid continues to pass the ball at an inexplicably alarming rate, which has constantly cost the team.

With a Pro Bowl quarterback in Donovan McNabb and an underrated group of receivers, it’s hard not to be tempted but at times, running the ball is necessarily to create balance, dry up the clock and keep your defense on the sidelines longer.

That defense figures to be a little weaker this year after the passing of the mastermind behind it, Jim Johnson.

While the Eagles were stung with the loss of their coordinator, they were also bitten in training camp when their leading tackler, Stewart Bradley suffered a season-ending injury.

Combined with the departure of safety Brian Dawkins in free agency and the trade of cornerback Lito Sheppard, these aren’t exactly losses any defense can take in stride – even one of the best.

Overall, both the Eagles defense and offense will be Top 10 units but they are still a brick short of a load.

One of the two sides of the ball is going to have to be out of this world for the Eagles to get over the Super Bowl hump and given the losses on defense, the burden will fall on the offense.

With Brian Westbrook and LeSean McCoy in the Eagles backfield, they figure to have the horses to do it and with McNabb, DeSean Jackson, Brent Celek and Kevin Curtis, the Eagles figure to have the passing weapons.

But it’s just not believable at this point. For all the talent the Eagles have, they are a maddeningly inconsistent team. While they did go to the NFC Championship last year, they had to win four of their last five games just to make the playoffs.

If they can develop their running game and their defense does suffer from the subtractions, they can be a double-digit win team and they can be the NFC East champs. But the likelihood is another season with Wild Card aspirations.

Note: Michael Vick has been added to the Eagles roster –  Thursday August 13th 2009.

This year’s team has as much talent and potential than any other under Andy Reid’s reign. Donovan McNabb is healthy and has head where it is supposed to be. Replacing Dawkins as a leader will be tough, but from a talent stand point Quentin Demps or Sean Jones will fill the gap. You mentioned losing Lito Sheppard as having a impact. He was on his way out last year, as he wasn’t even a starter. You mentioned ‘underrated receivers”, four words; DeSean Jackson, Jeremy Maclin. Also watch out for RB LeSean McCoy to be the thunder to Brian Westbrook’s lightning. Now that they added Michael Vick, he could be the x factor to getting over the hump. Despite your assessment, they have been and still are one of the most consistent teams in the league. It is only a matter of time before the win a Super Bowl. How many times did Bill Cowher loose in the playoffs, before breaking through and win the big one?

Your love of the Cowboys has clouded your vision of reality.

The Eagles. Always the bridesmaid never the bride. Welcome to the next year of close but not quite in the McNabb era. McNabb is an elite talent the line is solid and the WR are improved but defensively losing Johnson is going to hurt. The East is weaker this year than recent past but still the Eagles will struggle to keep up with the Giants and Cowboys. Perhaps the most explosive offense in the division/league but still 3rd in the East.

Definately one of the tougher teams to predict in the NFL but I will because that’s what I do. I see them finishing atop the division because of 4 things:

1) The teams in the NFC East seem to be weaker this year
2) The winning culture in Phili. Win or die sucka!!!!!!
3) Win one for Jimmy Johnson Baby – that D has more to play for this year than in any other.
4) Donovan is happy!
