Carolina Panthers vs. St. Louis Rams Preview

In a NFC match up this Sunday between a couple of teams that are under .500, but have some hope, the St. Louis Rams (3-4) host the Carolina Panthers (1-5). The Rams are 3-1 at home this season and have already tripled their win total form last season and in their last game the Panthers got their first win of the season beating the San Francisco 49ers 23-20. NFL lines have the Rams as 3-point favorites in this game with a total of 37.

The Rams are looking for their 4th straight home win and will try to do so against a Panthers squad that is 0-2 on the road this season. The St. Louis offense seems to play much better at home averaging 23.3 ppg there while they have only averaged 12.3 on the road.

Panthers’ QB Matt Moore was the starter to begin the season, but was benched in week 2 after his poor play. His time on the bench may have served him well, as he became the starter again in Carolina’s last game and he threw for a career high 308 yards. The Panthers are 3-0 when Moore passes for at least 200 yards.

Last week the Rams lost a heartbreaking game to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers giving up a TD pass with only 10 second left. The Rams let the Bucs back in the game after leading 17-6 at halftime. Rookie QB Sam Bradford only led the Rams to 96 yards in the 2nd half. He has had trouble finishing off games well, as in the first half of games this season he has 7 TD and 3 INT and in the second half he has 2 TD and 5 INT.

The big news for the Rams is it looks as if RB Steven Jackson will play despite a broken finger. St. Louis really needs him this Sunday, as he is the 5th leading rusher in the league and he has ran for over 100 yards in 3 straight games.

The Rams have been a good team to bet on this season, as they are 5-2 ATS while the Panthers are only 2-4 ATS. However, in the last 5 meetings between these 2 teams the Panthers have covered the spread every time. Football betting

Moore may have to do it all in this game, as not only is Carolina’s rushing offense ranked 23rd in the league, but they also may be without featured back DeAngelo Williams. He is questionable for the game with a foot injury and if he cannot go RB Jonathan Stewart will get most of the touches. Williams and Stewart have not played well this season and Stewart only has 148 rushing yards and is averaging a weak 3 yards per carry.

If the Rams’ pass defense can contain Moore they will be in good shape. They rank 18th in the league giving up an average of 221.9 passing yards per game. The Rams played decent on defense last week, but allowed Tampa Bay to get back in the game in the 2nd half and allowed Bucs’ QB Josh Freeman to orchestrate a 81 yard TD drive late in the 4th quarter.

When Bradford is picked off the Rams lose and he cannot turn the ball over in this game against a Panthers’ team that ranks 3rd in the league with 10 INT led by Charles Godfrey, who ranks 2nd in the NFL with 4 picks. The Rams have a better chance to win if Steven Jackson carries the offensive load. Also, the Panthers have been stellar this season defending the pass, but their rushing defense only ranks 24th in the league. Last week Carolina allowed 49ers’ RB Frank Gore to rush for over 100 yards and Jackson will top that mark in this game.

The Rams have been a solid team at home this season and with Jackson likely on the field it will make things a lot easier for Bradford. The Rams will have a good game running the ball and their defense will keep Moore from having a big game. The Rams will win their 4thstraight home game and cover the spread snapping Carolina’s 1-game winning streak.

Betting Trends

Carolina is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games following an ATS win, 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games as a road underdog, and has an Under record of 4-1 in their last 5 games.
St. Louis is 5-15-1 ATS in their last 21 games as a home favorite and has an Under record of 5-1 in their last 6 home games.

Pick: Rams -3
