Carolina Panthers vs. Atlanta Falcons Preview

The Falcons are known for their offense, but it was their D that stepped up in their last game and if they play defense like that in this division match up Carolina may be in trouble since they really struggled on offense in their last loss. NFL lines have the Falcons as 7-point home favorites with a total of 48.

In their last games the Falcons beat the San Diego Chargers 27-3 and the Panthers lost to the New York Giants 36-7.

On the season the Panthers are 1-2 ATS with an Over/Under record of 1-2 and the Falcons are 3-0 ATS with an Over/Under record of 1-2.

One thing the Panthers have going for them is that they will be well rested for this game since they have not played since last played last Thursday night.

The Falcons have won 4 straight games against the Panthers.

Can you say sophomore slump? Well, after 3 games that is what Cam Newton is going through, as he only has 2 TD as opposed to 5 INT. He was picked off 3 times in the loss to the Giants and while he has a good pair of WR’s in Steve Smith and Brandon LaFell he will be facing an Atlanta pass defense that ranks 7th in the league and shut down Phillip Rivers and the Chargers’ passing attack last week.

After struggling in the first game RB DeAngelo Williams has been decent in the last couple of games and the Panthers need to establish the run early in this game and they may have success facing the Falcons’ run defense that ranks 24th in the league. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

While Newton has not enjoyed much success early in the season Matt Ryan has the best QB rating in the league and he has no lack of targets in TE Tony Gonzalez and WR’s Roddy White and Julio Jones. The Panthers secondary has not been bad this season, but not good either ranking 18th in the league in pass defense.

Michael Turner had his best game of the season last week rushing for 80 yards averaging a legit 5.7 yards per carry and he may have an even better game since the Panthers’ run defense only ranks 27th in the league and they gave up 125 rushing yards to the Giants last week.

In some betting trends for this NFC match up the Panthers are 4-10 ATS vs. a team with a winning record and they have an Over record of 6-1-1 in their last 8 vs. a team with a winning record.

The Falcons are 3-0-1 ATS in their last 4 home games and they have an Under record of 6-2 in their last 8 home games.

The favorite has covered the spread in the last 4 games between these 2 teams.

Jason’s Pick: The Falcons have looked great while the Panthers have not and in Atlanta I can’t believe Atlanta is only a TD favorite. The Falcons will easily win this game and cover the spread.
