The Washington Redskins will be looking for their fifth win of the season when they travel to Ford Field this Sunday afternoon to take on the Detroit Lions in this NFC matchup. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. (ET) and the game will be broadcast regionally on FOX.

Washington reached its win total from last season by grinding out a 17-14 win over Chicago last week. The Redskins were a three-point road underdog and the total stayed well ‘under’ the 40 point line. It was their third win in the last four games as they currently find themselves tied for second in the NFC East, just a game behind New York. NFL Betting

Much was made about the arrival of Mike Shanahan as the new head coach and Donovan McNabb as the new starting quarterback and so far both has over-delivered on everyone’s expectations. Shanahan has finally brought some much needed organization and discipline to this franchise, while McNabb has provided the veteran leadership that has got this group of players to come together as a team. There are still some major areas of concern, especially with a defense that is ranked 31st in the league, but the Redskins have already shown that they will be competitive against any team they play.

Washington is 4-3 straight-up this season and 4-2-1 against the spread. It is 2-1 both SU and ATS on the road and the total has stayed ‘under’ in four of its first seven games.

Detroit is primed to turn things around as it comes off a bye with Matthew Stafford ready to return at quarterback. He went down with a separated shoulder in the Lions’ opening day 19-14 loss to Chicago. They have played every game tough from that point on but only have one victory against four more defeats to show for it. Given the fact that Detroit is only 2 ½ games in back of the Bears and Packers in the division, if they can string a few wins together the Lions would be right back in the thick of things in the NFC North.

Stafford should be able to step in and move an offense that is actually ranked seventh in the league in passing, but the Lions’ defense needs to improve across the board. It is ranked in the bottom  third of the league in just about every major category and is giving up an average of 23.2 points per game.

Detroit is 1-5 SU on the year, but 5-1 ATS. It is 1-1 SU and 2-0 at home and the total has gone ‘over’ in four of its six games overall.

Head-to-head the home team is 7-2 ATS in the last nine games and the Lions are 5-1 ATS in their last six games against the NFC. The total has stayed ‘under’ in six of the last eight games between these two teams.

Detroit appears to be headed for a breakout game and having Stafford back will be a huge plus against a Redskins defense that is ranked 31st against the pass.

Redskins/Eagles Betting Trends:

Washington is 5-1-1 ATS in its last 7 games on the road
The total has gone OVER in 4 of Washington’s last 6 games on the road
The total has gone OVER in 5 of Detroit’s last 6 games at home

Washington is 16-3 SU in its last 19 games when playing Detroit
The total has gone UNDER in 5 of Washington’s last 6 games when playing Detroit
The total has gone OVER in 4 of Detroit’s last 5 games
