The Chargers biggest enemy may be itself. There seems to be a lot of over confidence despite San Diego’s 1-2 start.

All we keep reading and hearing about is how San Diego has gone 6-8 in September in its four seasons under Turner, but  have  responded with winning streaks that netted them three AFC West titles.

Well, I don’t buy it, and the team’s sanguinity is nothing more than a disguise for playing some really dreadful football.

Heralded as the team to win the division, the Bolts should be winning games at will, but instead are paying like a bunch of underachievers that would probably have their asses handed to them by the local San Diego Pop Warner team.

With one of the best QBs in the NFC West –and possibly the entire NFL –Phillip Rivers, the Chargers have been ranked the 2nd best offense in the NFL. But you wouldn’t know it, as they have been giving away wins, including last week’s 27-20 loss to Seattle.

Despite Rivers’ franchise-record 455 yards and two touchdowns, San Diego imploded, committing five turnovers, including three lost fumbles, and the last coming when Rivers was picked off—for the second time — at the Seahawks’ 5-yard line in the final seconds.

But turnovers are not the only problems the team is struggling with. San Diego committed 11 penalties for 83 yards, and allowed two kickoff returns for scores, including a 99-yarder in the fourth quarter that led to their demise.

Some may call it a slow start; I call it careless.

In contrast, the Cardinals are a team that wasn’t expected to do much this season after the departure of Pro Bowl QB Kurt Warner, but somehow have been able to jump out to a 2-1 start and are tied for first with the Seahawks in the NFC West.

The Red Birds showed a lot of heart bouncing back from a 41-7 blowout at Atlanta in the previous week by hanging on to beat Oakland 24-23 on Sunday.

The Cardinals’  offensive strength this season has been their rushing offense, and got a lift as RB Beanie Wells returned to rush for 75 yards on 14 carries in Oakland.

The real problem remains at QB, and Derek Anderson, who went just 12 of 26 for 122 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in his last outing, will need to step it up as he will be facing a San Diego pass defense that ranks 6th in the league.

Defensively, Arizona is allowing 231.3 passing yards per game, and that number could go higher after its bout with Rivers, who has thrown for an NFL-high 1,087 yards.

The Cardinals have lost eight of 11 all-time meetings with San Diego with five of six meetings at Qualcomm resulting in defeat. If the Chargers can play “smart” football ball by hanging on to the rock, avoid giving away free penalty real estate, and establish some type of running attack, they may avoid being humiliated in front of 50,000 disappointed fans.
