The New York Giants take on the NFC East rival Washington Redskins this Sunday afternoon in search of a win to keep their playoff hopes alive. Kickoff from FedEX Field in Landover is set for 4:15 p.m. and the game will be broadcast regionally on FOX.
New York will be playing this game with an eye on the scoreboard as the only way it can make it into the postseason is with a win in the game coupled with a Green Bay loss to Chicago in a late start as well. The bad news for the Giants is that the Bears have already clinched a first-round bye and may look to rest some starters against the Packers.
The Giants have only themselves to blame for their current situation after blowing a 21-point lead in a 38-31 loss to Philadelphia as a three-point home favorite two weeks ago, and getting blown-out last week by Green Bay 45-17 as a 2 ½-point road underdog. They sit at 9-6 straight-up (7-8 against the spread) after going 3-3 in their last six games.
The bad news for New York just keeps coming as it looks like its leading receiver Hakeem Nicks and its starting center Shaun O’Hara will miss this game with injuries. The Giants already lost WR Steve Smith, so it will be up to Mario Manningham and TE Kevin Boss to pick up the slack. New York may not even be able to rely on its running game as heavily with RB Ahmad Bradshaw nicked-up for this one as well.
Washington has been playing out the string for the last few weeks, but last Sunday’s 20-17 overtime win over Jacksonville as a seven-point road underdog may spark some enthusiasm to try and officially end the Giants’ playoff hopes. A win would give the 6-9 Redskins (7-6-2 ATS) a three-win improvement over last year and a possible springboard to the 2011 season.
Much has been made about the benching of quarterback Donovan McNabb for the final three games of the season, but his replacement; Rex Grossman has played well enough to possibly justify the move. Grossman has thrown for 548 yards and five touchdowns in two starts after McNabb threw for only 14 TD’s in the first 13 games.
Washington’s primary problem is still on the defensive side of the ball, where it is ranked in the bottom third of the league in every major category. It is has shown some improvement in points allowed over the past several weeks, but still remains one of the worst units in the NFL.
Trends:
New York is 3-2 ATS in its last five games on the road but 2-5 ATS in its last seven games overall. The total has gone ‘over’ in three of its last five games.
Washington is 0-2-2 ATS in its last four home games and 3-2-1 ATS in its last six games overall. The total has stayed ‘under’ in five of its last six games.
Head-to-head, the Giants have won eight of the last nine games SU and is 7-1-1 ATS. Earlier this season, New York crushed the ‘Skins 31-7 as a seven-point home favorite. The total stayed ‘under’ the 43 point line and has stayed ‘under’ in six of the last nine meetings overall.
There could actually be more at stake than a playoff berth for the Giants in this game, as another loss will most likely end up costing some players and coaches their jobs. Take the G-Men to rally with impressive victory to close out the regular season on a winning note.
The Pick: New York -4 and UNDER.
