A wildcard spot in the playoffs is on the line when the New York Giants travel to Lambeau Field in Green Bay this upcoming Sunday afternoon to take on the Packers. Kickoff is set for 4:15 p.m. and the game will be broadcast nationally on FOX.

New York is coming off the wrong end of one of the wildest finishes in the history of the NFL and quickly needs to put last week’s 38-31 meltdown to Philadelphia behind itself, to focus on nailing down a wildcard berth with a win in this game. The question is how will this team react to blowing a 21 point lead with less than eight minutes to play in a game it was favored to win by three points at home?

The Giants loss last week left them essentially two games behind the Eagles in the NFC East with an overall record of 9-5 straight-up (7-7 against the spread) so winning the division is not impossible but highly unrealistic given that Philly plays Minnesota and Dallas at home in its last two games. What is possible is a shot at redemption with a win against the Packers which would almost erase the memory of last week’s game and put them back on track to make another historic run in the playoffs. All that New York has to do to win this game is play 60 minutes of football. They have the star power on offense with Eli Manning, Hakeem Nicks, and Ahmad Bradshaw and a defense that is ranked second in the league. They proved this last week by dominating the Eagles for 52 minutes in every phase of the game.

Just five weeks ago, Green Bay appeared to be on its way to the NFC North title and the number one or two seed in the conference, as the Packers were 7-3 and in complete control of their destiny. A tough 20-17 loss to Atlanta as a 2 ½-point road underdog started a negative chain reaction that has resulted in three losses in their last four games. They are currently 8-6 both SU and ATS and facing elimination with a loss in this game.

The good news out of Green Bay this week is that quarterback Aaron Rodgers as been cleared to play after suffering a concussion in a Week 14 loss to Detroit. Without him, it is safe to say the Packers had no chance to win this game although backup QB Matt Flynn put forth a valiant effort in last week’s loss to New England.

Rodgers has not played his best football this season, but December at Lambeau with the playoffs on the line is the perfect setting for him to have the game of his life. All the tools are there as the Packers’ offense is still ranked 10th in the league in scoring and the defense is ranked first in points allowed.

New York is 4-1 ATS in its last five games on the road, but just 2-4 ATS in its last six games overall. The total has gone ‘over’ in six of its last nine games.
Green Bay is 3-0 ATS in its last three home games and 6-2 ATS in its last eight games overall. The total has stayed ‘under’ in six of its last 10 games.

The last time these two teams faced one another was in the 2008 NFC Championship Game with the Giants pulling out a 23-20 win overtime as a 7 ½-point road underdog. This time around the spread is not as wide and the stage is not as big and the result will not be the same. It is never wise to bet against Green Bay playing at home late in the season with so much on the line, do don’t.

The Pick: Green Bay -2 ½ and UNDER.
