Cleveland
Last year the big question was always whether it should be Anderson or Quinn starting, but now the Browns have got rid of both and are starting over at the quarterback spot. The Browns just haven’t been able to keep pace in a tough AFC North the last few years. They appear to be making some progress, but they are also a long ways from where they need to be.
Jake Delhomme will be the starting quarterback for the Browns. Delhomme had just 8 touchdowns and 18 interceptions with Carolina last year, so you have to wonder a little about how he will fare. The running game was bolstered in the offseason, but the loss of Hardesty for the year to injury in the preseason was a tough blow. Mangini’s team will definitely look to run first, so they will need Jerome Harrison to continue what he started at the end of last season.
The Browns defense is led by a great secondary, but the front seven aren’t quite where they need to be. The outside linebackers haven’t proven that they can get heat on the quarterback and the interior of the defense will be counting on Shaun Rogers to really clog up the line. Teams will definitely try to run the ball down the throat of the Browns this year.
Tampa Bay
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers suffered through a long 3-13 season in 2009. Raheem Morris should have a little more talent to work with this year, but just as the case with Mangini and the Browns, this team simply isn’t as good as most of the teams in their league.
The team has decided that Josh Freeman is their quarterback. Freeman actually guided the team to all three of the wins, and flashed the potential to be a solid quarterback. Freeman needs to improve his decision making and he has a chance to be a good leader. The team expects to get a better effort from their rushing attack this year with Cadillac Williams and an improved offensive line. Arrelious Benn and Mike Williams should help with the passing attack this year.
The Buccaneers invested a ton of money into Gerald McCoy to be the leader of this defense. Tampa Bay’s run defense was horrendous in 2009, allowing 158 yards per game on the ground, which was worst in the NFL. The rest of the defense is also quite weak, and this team struggled to force turnovers in 2009. The middle of the defense should be stronger, but they’ll still struggle to pressure the quarterback and be one of the worst teams against the run in the NFL.

This won’t be a pretty football game, so I would advise you to tune into a different matchup if you are looking for a stylish game. I don’t expect either of these teams to be good in 2010, but I do think the Browns are a little closer to being competitive than Tampa Bay. If you can get Cleveland and 3 points, I think that is the play.
