The Carolina Panthers kickoff their 2010 NFL regular season with a trip to East Rutherford, New Jersey to take on the New York Giants in the brand new billion dollar New Meadowlands Stadium.

Both teams come into this game with the hopes of getting off to a strong start that will put the memories of a disappointing 2009 season behind them. Carolina got off to a slow start in 2009 and never recovered. It ended the year 8-8 overall and in third place in the NFC South. New York got off to a great start in 2009 with wins in its first five games. Things came unraveled, especially on defense, as the Giants stumbled to an 8-8 record and third place finish in the NFC East.

The Panthers enter the season with Matt Moore as their starting QB. In relief of Jake Delhomme, who is now the starter in Cleveland, Moore started the final five games of the 2009 season and led the team to four wins. This preseason, Moore looked a bit shaky in limited work, completing only 49.1 percent of his passes for just 279 yards.

Moore did not have his favorite target on the field as WR Steve Smith sat out the majority of the preseason recovering from a broken arm. In his place, third round draft pick Armanti Edwards, who played QB at Appalachian State, was the team’s leading receiver with nine catches for 60 yards. NFL Betting

Against the Giants, expect the Panthers to try and move the ball on the ground with RB’s DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart, who combined for over 2,220 yards rushing last season. Stewart has been recovering from offseason knee surgery, but is expected to be ready for this game.

QB Eli Manning will once again be the key to the Giant’s success in 2010. Despite the second half collapse last season, Manning’s numbers remained solid as he threw for 4,021 yards and completed 63.3 percent of his passes. These both were career highs in his six seasons in New York.

The primary receivers in New York’s passing attack will be their Steve Smith and Mario Manningham. Smith led the team in 2009 with 107 receptions for 1,220 yards. The running game will be anchored by Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw, who combined for over 1,600 yards last year.

The last time these two team met was in Week 16 with Carolina coming away with a 41-9 victory as an 8 ½ point road dog. The game total went ‘over’ the 43 point total. The Panthers are 4-2 against the spread in their last five games against the Giants and 3-1 ATS in their last four on the road. The game total has gone ‘over’ in five of six of these games.

Neither team looked all that impressive this preseason, as both first team offenses struggled to put points on the board. You can expect this to carry over into this game as both teams will look to grind it out on the ground with their running game. The Panthers will find a way to keep this game close until the end, but will not be able to spoil the Giants’ home opener in their new stadium with an outright win.

The Pick: Carolina +7 and UNDER
