NFC East Game Previews – Philadelphia Eagles vs. Washington Redskins

The beleaguered Philadelphia Eagles will look to snap a rare four-game losing streak this Sunday afternoon when they square-off against the Washington Redskins at FedEx Field in a classic NFC East rivalry. Game time is slated for 1 p.m. (ET) and it will be broadcast nationally on FOX.

For a team that was supposed to seriously compete for a world title this season, nothing has gone according to script for Philadelphia. Its 1-4 straight-up start (1-4 against the spread) is the worst since Andy Reid’s first year as head coach in 1999 and the prospect for any kind of dramatic turnaround does not look good given how this team has played the past few weeks.

The Eagles’ problems have been on both sides of the ball. Even though the offense is ranked third in the league overall and 11th in scoring, it has turned the ball over 15 times (nine interceptions and six lost fumbles). Philadelphia’s defense is ranked 15th overall, but giving up 140.2 yards a game on the ground and 26.4 points a game.

Washington was a longshot at best to win the NFC East, but through the quarter pole of its season it is 3-1 SU (3-1 ATS) and in first-place in the division. It comes into this game fresh off a bye week and went into its bye with a 17-10 victory over St. Louis as a three-point road favorite. Its only loss of the year was an 18-16 setback to Dallas as a 3.5-point road underdog. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

The Redskins’ success can been attributed to an old-fashioned approach to the game with a rushing attack that is averaging 126.8 yards a game and a defense that is giving up just 15.8 points per game. Rex Grossman’s numbers are anything but flashy with 989 yards passing and six touchdown passes, but he has done a good job managing the game so far.

Philadelphia is 4-1 SU and 3-1-1 ATS in its last four trips to Washington and the road team in this series is a perfect 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings. The total has gone ‘over’ in three of the last five games at FedEx Field.

This could be the Eagles last stand as another loss would probably send this team spiralling towards a total collapse. Stick with Philadelphia to end its skid at four with a hard-fought win on the road.
